Dekers
The tops are easy, it is the support/legs that need care and attention. The first plan in the OP doesn't offer enough ground support to my mind, I can see that moving. I seldom use benches anywhere except target work, and then rarely, but they are seriously solid, which tend to compromise "portable"! straightshooter1
just to make it clear not looking to enter the Olympics with this just something that is reasonable sturdy for zeroing and a bit of target practice just so I don't have to lay on the floor or across the bonnet, also needs to be portable ie with removable legs or fold away legs http://www.gunandgame.com/forums/powder-keg/52871-portable-shooting-bench.html or http://www.longrangehunting.com/forums/f43/portable-shooting-benches-spf-23244/ or http://bulletin.accurateshooter.com/2012/01/shot-show-stukey-sturdy-shooting-bench/ just looking to see what everyone thought or if there is a better designthat someone has my favourite is the second one above so far
Dekers
Just remember you have to sit at it somehow, therefore it must accommodate a chair/stool legs, and your legs COMFORTABLY! Edited July 6, 2013 by Dekers

Dekers
And my belly  What do you think of this one? http://www.longrange...ches-spf-23244/ That is ambidextrous, if portable is a concern there is an opportunity to reduce the size/weight, if it is solely for your use! The legs look awkward to me bearing in mind my comments in #8, difficult to tell though, but for a quick/easy portable bench it seems ok. Personally I don't like benches, never can shoot off them as well as prone, and you don't need anything but a rifle and bipod for VERY accurate prone shooting. I always get bounce off benches so I tend to avoid them if possible, but we are all different!
Mike737
This is what I knocked up in about an hour, for zeroing. The rear support adjusts up and down, the left to right is a bit crude at the moment, just turning the bench, but I might build in a locking swivel as a refinement. Sight at the target and shoot, then with the gun resting in the stand adjust so that it is pointing exactly at the target, and adjust the windage and elevation until it is aimed at the pellet hole, without moving the rifle. Two or three shots should have it zeroed. Worked for me, anyway. Mike

straightshooter1
i have found a supplier that specialises in folding legs they have different height hinges so they fold into each other and also different widths so you get the narrower ones for the narrower end and wider for the wider end
malantone
AN ADDITION TO YOUR TALBE TOP :- MOUNT A SCISSOR JACK WITH A RIFLE REST ON TOP, I USE ONE BOLT DOWN THROUGH THE CENTRE WITH A HUGE WASHER UNDERNEATH , THEN PUT A WOODEN BLOCK WITH V FOR THE RIFLE ON THE TOP. YOU WILL FIND ITIS SOLID AND FULLY AJUSTABLE,
