Lampwick
Went for a walk and paddle with my wife and son yesterday and the wife squealed "look a baby eel" Well cutting a long story short I managed to catch it and low and behold it was a Lamprey, or more specifically "Ammocoetes larva of Lethenteron" thanks Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Ammocoetes-l_reissneri-01.jpg Never seen one before, it was only about four inches long. Anyhoo got into work this morning and one of the chaps was on the river too and he managed to catch two!!!

Lampwick
Question have Lamprey numbers been in decline for some time ? I thought I read this some where ? . No idea sorry, but I wouldn't be surprised there appears to be a problem with most migratory fish!
Pole Star
The horrid parasitic or perhaps predators? were said to be good eating in medieval times so they must have been available in large numbers , I think it is said one of our medieval kings was thought to have died from food poisoning after eating Lampreys , but then he might have been bumped off ! . Any one ever eat them
ack-ack
They are spawning at this time of year. I've observed them making 'nests' in the gravels of chalk streams and then getting jiggy. They look like they 're dancing. I reported it to the env agency as i thought f&b might be interested but they didnt seem that bothered. I thought it was magic. Google sea lamprey. That will **** you up if you like sea swimming!!!!

andypaint
When I was younger and wading into the river dee . Quite often when coming out of the water id find one or two lampreys attached to my legs. Pulling them off was a nightmare and then bled for a while afterwards.
