soap
I have been looking at getting some more cartridges for the next season. I am fairly happy with the Gamebore steel I usually use. I have been looking at Hevi Shot. From what I understand it is slightly heavier than lead and a fair bit heavier steel- The load sizes for Hevi Shot (http://www.justcartridges.com/pdf/nontoxic.pdf) seem to be the opposite to what I would expect. I am assuming you could fit roughly the same number of lead, steel or hs pellets into a 3” cartridge. Why only 34gm of hs in a 3” cartridge when there is 36gm of steel and 46gm of bismuth? scolopax
financial reasons only. because Hevi Shot is extremely expensive, by reducing the amount of shot in a cartridge they tried to keep the shells at least partially affordable as the price of the raw ingredient continued to increase.. chrispti
That's the same reason as to why we are seeing more pigeon cartridges in 29g, rather the usual 30g or 32g.
Grandalf
3" 34g No 3 is all you need with Hevi Shot. Being 10% denser than lead that will do the business. Good for both geese and ducks. There used to be a 3.5" heavier one but apparently it was damaging older guns. They work - I have used them for years. roughshooter
Good shells but at £27.50 for 10 they hurt the pocket - saying that if you are feeling flush then I have 13 boxes here - mostly 36g 1 and 3 as well as some 31g 5 shot. There is even a box of 40g! If anybodies numbers come up tonight then pm me!!!! Graham
rjimmer
Why worry about different shot, when BASC's Dr John Harradine gets up at a wildfowling conference and declares that he had shot with both steel and lead, and couldn't tell the difference. anser2
John is right there is little difference between a good quality steel shells and lead. I use steel now not only for wildfowl , but also pigeon and game with very good results. The big problem ios many people do knopw know how to shoot properly and use the right load and more important shot size and choke for the job. Beware though there is some rubbish steel shellls out there but you will not go far wrong with Gamebore , RC or Remmington.
rjimmer
John is right there is little difference between a good quality steel shells and lead. I had come to the conclusion that Dr John misses with everything, no matter what he has in the cartridges.
