Reeceknight
ok so been shooting a while bit only lately have I been going clays every Thursday with a few blokes from work, all of wich seem to have all the best gear available. now I'm shooting with a bettinsoli xtrail and that's used only for clays, so I have a gun (good start) but wanted to purchase a few things and am over whelmed buy all the stuff. 1.shooting glasses for summer? do I need a million pound shooting glasses or will my raybans do? Is there a reason there classed as "shooting glasses" , or just highly priced because of the brand. 2. High vis/glow sights? I get they are ment to be good for dominant eyes but everyone seems to have them and I don't get how they help you shoot better if you have a clear sight of the bead. 3. And cartridges? I don't seem to care what I'm shooting with yet others seem to be obsessed, is there a particulate decent cartridge? iv just switched to the hull super fasts and see no difference. I think we covered the chokes so don't need to go down that route, there a waste of money for extended ported chokes so I didn't bother. Would be grateful for any advice. Malik
I think you'll find your ray bans are more over priced than shooting glasses. Shooting glasses are designed to withstand impact of projectiles amongst other things Personally, i have these http://uk.oakley.com/products/5544/17953 they are the best quality and ergonomically designed in my opinion. Its all personal preference on carts. It also depends if your gun likes them. Some semis and pumps dont like certain carts or loads. I shoot clays with my O/U anything 28gm 7 1/2 for everything except skeet. 28gm 9s when im doing skeet
welshwarrior
ok so been shooting a while bit only lately have I been going clays every Thursday with a few blokes from work, all of wich seem to have all the best gear available. now I'm shooting with a bettinsoli xtrail and that's used only for clays, so I have a gun (good start) but wanted to purchase a few things and am over whelmed buy all the stuff. 1.shooting glasses for summer? do I need a million pound shooting glasses or will my raybans do? I get they are ment to be good for dominant eyes but everyone seems to have them and I don't get how they help you shoot better if you have a clear sight of the bead. Waste of money you look at the clay not the bead so it doesnt matter what colour it is or if its even fitted I remove them on some of my coaching guns to stop people aiming at the clay. Find what you like and shoots good patterns in your gun but most modern cartridges are very good so don't stress about it. Would be grateful for any advice. The only other thing I would look at is a skeet vest they can help the gun mount and have big pockets for cartridges, you dont need an orange labeled all singing all dancing one just a comfortable one with a leather or leatherette patch to mount the gun on. Forgot to say you need to get a good set of ear defenders either muffs or ear plugs Edited July 18, 2013 by welshwarrior
neil3728
As mentioned above, shooting glasses are designed to take an impact, I have these http://uk.oakley.com/products/6721 only in red. Cartridges find something and stick to it. hull superfast are fine. Same cartridge I shoot with. Only thing you havent mentioned is ear defenders, buy something that will last and are comfy. hillmouse
Essentials. Shooting glasses (Topgun for value, Oakley for niceness) Ear defenders (foam plugs £1, top spec electronics £500 plus.) Baseball cap. INSURANCE. Nice to have and very useful. Skeet vest, range bag. Nice to have if you have nowt else to spend it on. Shooting shoes/boots. Proper shooting waterproofs. As to cartridges and chokes. Find a comfortable cartridge at a sensible price and stick to it. Put 1/4 and 1/2 choke in and spend the time worrying about pick up points, gun hold, lead, mount stance and other very important stuff. Nobody ever missed a target because they had the wrong choke in. They might not have broken it, but bad technique makes you miss, not the "wrong" choke. All this presumes you have had the basics of fit, mount and eye dominance sorted. If not, a lesson with a proper coach is money well spent. 955i
You need to spend as much as possible on everything you buy. Glasses, vest etc. Will improve your shooting by miles Only kidding, just buy what you think you need, if you can get it for £5 instead of £50 just cos it doesn't have the right nametag then go for it. Reeceknight
cheers for the advice lads, I have ear protection from game shooting etc and bag, I just must look like a complete farmer compared to everyone else with my flat cap on lol il purchase some shooting glasses, I won't buy Oakley I spent £300 on some Oakley Juliet's and hardly use them! but I'm sure a local shop sells them they just restrict my view to much. I Spose all this really is just people personal preference. I'm ok at clays (you never stop learning) I just wondered if I was missing out due to not having extended chokes and hi vis sights hahaha. I need a vest and have my eye on a few, have been looking at the musto one. want a good quality one. maybe spend 20-30 on glasses and use the rest on lessons! bostonmick
I use the cheapest cartridges I can find for skeet eley Olympics or firsts for sporting,i tried superfast but they made my 687 eell behave like an amimal not saying there is anything wrong with them just don't suit my gun,the only thing I spent a lot of money on is glasses I need prescription lens and bought them zeiss ones you will need a pair with yellow lens for dull days but ordinary brown tint would suit for normal days, skeet vest is a given,i use ear plugs as I cant stand the muff type but the main thing is enjoy your shooting.i would not worry about swapping cartridges looking for the magic one they don't exist,
glb8686
Another vote for a musto vest here. Very good quality gear.
neil3728
I picked my Oakley's up for around £100, from an outlet store, the only difference to the ones in my above post is mine are red ,probabily last years colour. My daughers actually chose the colour of my glasses to match my sonic ear defenders, which they also chose the colour of. A light weight skeet vest is nice, I might look for one as mine is more for colder weather, but I was at the clays last night in shorts and a t-shirt, and coped alright. Malik
I picked my Oakley's up for around £100. I think mine were 110 on oakleys uk online. Came with free 48 hour delivery. Which was very impressive after using the tracking feature. They went from California to texas, texas to Germany. Germany to Birmingham. Then from there to me. All in 48hours?! Animal Mother
If you don't want a vest then go for one of these. It's what I did as I don't like the vests. They are made by Beretta and are cheap from ebay. They have a holder for a box of carts, empty shell bag and a pouch for glasses. http://www.thesportinglodge.co.uk/shop/products/beretta-pro-clay-belt.htm
