Underdog
A slow lead slug will always "Wang"....very rarely will you here that from your Hornet. The bullet will be that mashed it won't want to fly far. A slow lead slug stays in pretty good shape and holds on to most its mass. It is a big concern using my 357! U. I agree and have been using lead tipped bullets in my hornet for near a year and have had very little in the line of ricochets. I would suggest a standard 40/45g hornet round or the 35 grain vmax equivalent when supply's run out (nosler varmageden 35 g.)and Use what Lil gun you have for now and when you run out look into h110 powder for the lighter bullets. As you will gain velocity with out over filling your cases It's all fun this reloading lark ! Karl.
Underdog
H110 was my fave in Hornet. Have some if someone wants to collect it. I have gone off it for my 357....sticking with A2400....another good Hornet fuel. U.

casts_by_fly
Daz, If H110 is interesting to you, I have a full tub here (plus a little bit of lil gun that I won't get through). I also have some 40 gr vmax (and 50gr SBKs). If any of that is interesting to trial, drop me a PM. I'm only down near Beverley and shoot near driffield, so not a million miles off. thanks rick

JDog
I enjoy reading this topic but as a non rifle shooter I have yet to understand a word. It's all so technical what with twists, weight of bullets and powder, primers etc
ThePestControllers
Morning JDog it was new to me not very long ago but to be honest all the help from friendly guys on here as really helped me get to grips with the subject. but also i go on youtube and watch videos of people actually loading and showing you how to go about it. i dont know about you but i am one of these that when i see someone do something i find it easier to get to grips with rather than reading about it. a bit like i was saying to Phil ime more of a hands on type person. if you look at reloading data sheets and break the individual parts down like for instance it will usually list bullet type first like 35gr v-max then manufacturer of the bullet like Hornady then powder maybe H110 thats hodgdon H110 then bullet diameter .224" in the case of 22 Hornet then C.O.L is (Cartridge Overall Length) But i refer to the manual that comes with dies then grains of powder usually min-max in grains then velocity for each powder load and finally pressure in cup (Copper Units of Pressure) so if you go on the Hodgdons data website you may understand it a little more Hopefully. twist rate is the rifling down the barrel as in 1-16" means one full twist in 16" this is the rifles ability to stabilise a bullet at certain velocities and lengths but theres a lot more experienced people and technically advanced on here than me who know a lot more about this subject. JDog
Thank you for such a complete and thorough explanation. I have shot red and roe in the past, all with a .243/.270. The latter on red stags.

JDog
Do you not fancy getting into shooting again Not rifle shooting but I have shot getting on for 3000 pigeons and corvids this year so I suppose I am 'into shooting' just a little bit. I am lucky that I do have quite a bit of land to shoot over which has pigeons at certain times of the year. This year has been quite frenetic on spring beans and then spring rape. Some barley and rape has been harvested but as yet the pigeons are not on those fields in sufficient numbers to have a decent day's decoying. Last Thursday I had 166 pigeons and 63 corvids for a total of 229 head on laid barley but I do not enjoy it when lots of birds are left unpicked so I have decided against shooting any more laid crops. kent
How much you fit in depends largely on the case. RWS don't have a massive capacity compared to Winchester. Fact is LilGun is a funny powder you can get max velocity as low as 10.5 grains and only the SD really alters as you get to a higher fill level. From my own testing velocity peaks at low and high fill levels and takes a dip in the in between levels. No I haven't the foggiest why this occurs but it sure does. You will not beat ricochets with bullets (at best you might get a little mitigation) and the 35v-max gives very similar in flight ballistics to a HMR with quite a large amount of extra energy. Even those little 17 grain pills ricochet. The other way of getting more in the Hornet case is a long drop tube, it stacks the powder in neater and helps prevent spillage when moving the case to seat the bullet
ThePestControllers
Hi Kent i have just done some test loads i guess i should of done that first but in my hast i just loaded 50 to get used to loading and the equipment. but anyway i have just loaded 50 from 12g to 12.8g lil,gun the privvi cases were a bit short at first but after i resized them because they are new the length altered to just below maximum case length limit but there was no way 13g would of fit in even trying to tap the case to get it to compress a little better. hopefully i can get out and test them on Tuesday the air rifle is not suited to the distance really nor the shotgun but i get your point. daz
