part timer
Checking our duck today found one 100 yards away from the island they are on with just its head missing. I know tawny owls do it to pheasants but could a tawny carry an 8 week old duck away? Or was it a mink?
fenboy
I always thought head missing was a classic sign of fox
Ferretboy111
Fox for sure. Tawnys won't attack an 8 week old duck! Cheers
foxy bingo
an eight week old duck, a fox will take it all without removing its head I would think
r1steele
an eight week old duck, a fox will take it all without removing its head I would think Heads missing is usually a sign of tawny owls, but foxes often do the same. Usually an exited fox will do a few rather than one, but this sounds like it was possibly a cub that may have been distracted by something after the kill. Dog bark, mouse/rabbit squeak it doesn't take much to distract them.
part timer
I just thought a fox would struggle to get them and if it could get one would kill more

Kes
We have had buzzards take the heads off poults next to a pen. When did it happen that might be the best guide ?
scotslad
Tawny's usually take pheas off the roost in the trees, last year only bothered us once, 2 nites on trot but this was late sept so birds were almost full grown, done about 15 in the 2 nites. Never heard off them doing ducks thou, not sayiny they wont, but never heard off it. Fox would possibly be the favourite, is it possible the duck waddled away from the rest itself? And then got ambushed by a fox
