.22 Hornet brass question

Recommended Posts

Hello

so far i am more than happy with my loads and at the moment i am not going to mess around with new bullets/powders.

but know have some questions abbout brass.

1. what presure signs/weare and teare, to look for on brass ( so far they look like new no splits bulging etc. and primers sit tight)

2. do you anneal hornet brass and if yes after how many shots.

3.if i only neck size brass when i do need to trim it and to what lenght.

4. How many shots you expect from your brass using lil gun powder. (more or les is it 5,10 shots per case)

Thank You again for all help.

I binned a batch of S&B brass after 12 firings because I was starting to get splits. Trimming wise just use a specialist case trimmer. They're very cheap and the mandrel that fits inside the case to hold it square is cartridge specific so there's no adjustment needed - just hold the case in the holder, stick the trimmer in and turn until it stops biting. I never bothered to anneal mine. I suppose I may have got more life out of it if I did, but I figured that with the number of shots I was getting from it I couldn't be bothered! If you're using the lee crimp the necks will start to split on the ends before you have any really serious issues like head separation. :good:

With Hornet watch out for a ring developing just above/forward of the solid head part. This is a sign of case head separation developing, a traight of Hornet and its long tapered body.

The pressure causes the thin brass to flow forward......has to come from somewhere !

As said...Lee trimmer and cutter.

You can get a metal paper clip and straighten it out. Grind a point on one end and then with pliers bend just the point to a right angle.

You can now drag that inside the case and feel if a deep ring is forming inside.

A magnifying glass will show stretch marks on the outside if a visible ring is forming outside.

I don't trim (never had any long enough to bother) I don't anneal (I do get neck tension issues occurring from the 8th reload), I always check the inside for any sign of separation (never had one yet).

I only lightly size the neck enough to grip and use RWS brass in the main

Hay he's back ;) hope all is well mr Kent !

I have a new powder for you to try. 300 mp its marketed as closes to Lil guns performance but with better sd.

Back to the brass. I was talking about it with a friend and as he pointed out its not the end of the world if you only get 3/5 firings from each case there less than 20p each that's cheep shooting that mate !

Funny was just researching the stuff BUT Kranks don't have it on their webpage. As its really a magnum pistol powder don't know how easy it will be to get. Pistol guys say its a flame thrower and a ball powder

Info on Honet with 40 grn v-max was min COL 1.81" 11.7 max 2944 fps 24" barrel Winchester brass Fed 205m primer

I have some :) I got rimfiremagic to get me and nick a tub in :) it's very tiny ball type powder designed for small cartridges. The septic tanks have been using it in k hornets with 40 grain bullets to about 3250 fps with really soft primers. Will let you know how it gos !

karl,

if you want one powder for both then Lil gun will do it. A bit over 16 grains under a 40 gr v-max in the 221 is what my dad's CZ shoots well. I think it was pushing 3300 or so with ease.

I'd be interested in the 300 MP if someone can run it through quickload. It could be a good 17 hornet powder. Lil gun works but can be a bit 'twitchy' and the 17's don't like twitchy. I use H4198, but H110,AA1680, and VVN 110/120 are also doable in the hornet. I suspect 300MP might be in that same region of burn rate.

Who makes it?

thanks

rick

It's allient who make it mate I have been doing some tests but a problem to day put me back a few days. 11.3 grains is extremely accurate with a 45 grain pill from my Cz. Just got a few more to test in the next few days.

It's a very fine and I mean fine ball powder so fits lovely into small cases :)

All the best

Karl.

There is load data for the 357 ;) it's supposed to be a flame thrower in pistols though :/

A question the septic tanks are using a primer called wolf primers with this powder have you come across any ?
