David BASC
With legal aid all but gone now under new legislation its surely better for BASC's members to pay an extra few quid for £100,000k legal expenses, plus the backing of BASC's 5 firearms experts...and all the rest of the political and media work BASC delivers for all of you as a shooter I think BASC is the best bet for shooting...don't you? tjm160
In short David; yes. However, like many on the thread, I wasn't aware that legal cover wasn't covered in the standard BASC membership. I'm also struggling to find out how to add to my membership from within the BASC members area. Please can you point me in the right direction? David BASC
As I have said before, we have self insured appeals in the past, indeed we are in court this week with a member running an appeal. The new legal expenses policy, if Council choose to adopt it, will let us run cases quicker and more smoothly. The only time you need to enter your membership number usually is at the log in point, but if you are having problems, please let me know which section of the members area you are on and I will do all I can to help, but please understand I am on leave today and tuesday with only intermittent access to a PC. mossy835
country cover club, annual £29-95 with £50,000 legal expenses cover.
David BASC
I think you will find that the Country Cover Club legal expenses policy only covers your legal costs for perusing a personal injury claim and does not cover the cost of firearms appeals, as I have said before, always read the policy wording before buying any product containing insurance cover, as only by doing so will you see exactly what is and is not covered. Please understand it is not my intention to run down C3, the chap who runs it is a long standing BASC member, and its a decent liability policy. But as I have said, insurance is one thing, political, legal lobbying is as, if not more important for all of us, David

tjm160
Totally agree Mossy, it would just be nice to have everything wrapped up in the one policy. It's not logging in that I'm having trouble with David You mentioned that legal expense cover can be added to ones membership and I was just looking to find out how. Or have I misunderstood and it is not yet available even as an optional add-on?
David BASC
Aha, I see. The plan was (and its still a 'fall back' option) to have £100k of legal expenses cover as an optional extra that members could buy for around £20-25 on top of their BASC membership. This something I and colleagues from the firearms team have been developing for the last 6 months. However my preferred option, as backed by Dee Wildfowler and others, is to add it as a standard feature for all BASC members as soon as possible. There is, of course, a cost associated with this, but way below £20-25 per member and the formal proposal will go to BASC Council over the next month or so as they go through the budget setting process for BASC' s 2014 budget. If the proposal goes through then the plan will be that as of 1st January 2014 all members will automatically get the £100k cover. In the mean time we will continue to self insure as we always have, and we have looked at how that process can be speeded up, as that has been a criticism of the system in the past. It is very much BASC's policy to put members first, and I welcome the feedback from members of this forum ; both BASC members , ex members and others that had helped me to seek out what changes shooters would like to see and to try and put wheels in motion. subsonicnat
Sounds like another Hike in fee`s coming up?.
tjm160
Great stuff David, I hope the proposal gets through. Naturally I would rather pay £3 for the cover and see the cover benefit all members. Equally, if the proposal should (inexplicably) not get through, I would personally rather pay more and have as part of the same policy from BASC than have to look elsewhere. £3 = half a box of cartridges; come on guys We've already seen the effect on the unfortunate few who've found themselves in need yet without the cover. subsonicnat
I Knew a man many years ago, in fact a gentleman Farmer,, who quoted that "Shooting should be for the man who could least afford it".. I think another Hike would take his words and rip them up. enough said:
David BASC
I would point out subsonic and indeed those who have the same thought, that rarely do you get something for nothing, and the last time the BASC sub increased (and in fact some membership grades reduced in cost) was in 2010. And in that time we have faced off some of the most severe and potentially damaging attacks on our sport though our media work and political lobbying, we have also secured many thousands of acres of shooting rights for members, and of course struck major victories with firearms / shotgun forms and conditions on firearms certificates. All of this has been delivered with no increase in subs, tight budget control and lots of hard work for the benefit of the shooting community. An addition of £100k of legal expenses cover, over and above the improving support for members from our firearms team on licencing issues is a massive step forwards and a significant improvement of the membership package, yes it will almost certainly result in a small increase in fees, but little if any more than had we put a £1 or so on the sub each year from 2010. A small increase in cost, yes, a massive increase in value - most certainly David
tjm160
Indeed and hence why £3 per member would be more equitable than £20-£25 for those who can afford the extra cover. If one just desires insurance as has been discussed, there are providers who just provide insurance. However, BASC provides far more than simple insurance and if I may dare say, if we desire to retain the freedom to enjoy our sport, we should continue to support BASC.
