harrycatcat1
I have something to pick up from Carmarthen and its about 250 miles for me to there so I am going to stop over night with the wife so can you recommend anywhere hotel or guest house? (not £175 per night like one wanted) I have looked at some in Tenby but most are still well booked up or have no parking. Thinking of going down this Friday coming back Saturday although don't have to could go Sat come back Sun what do you think would be best for traffic? Regards Hcc Traffic down on friday will be normal, the bridge will get a tail back between 16.30-17.30, i would personally come over the hills through newtown-llandrindod wells, less traffic nice views fun drive. If you want cheap there is a travel lodge in st clears a 10 minute drive from carmarthen,or a search of the area will find lots of places e.g http://www.threerivershotel.co.uk/ Eating i would recommend http://www.ypolynrestaurant.co.uk/ their motto is "fat equals flavour live with it" good solid tasty well made food, worth booking in advance gets busy, they get good press all the time see their press section,i like the no frills good food and their fresh bread is mouth watering. Cheers mate thanks for that I was thinking of coming down M50 to join up with M4 to avoid M5 and same back to avoid tailbacks, Is that the route you mean? HDAV
depends what you fancy the run down through mid wales is nice and avoids the M5/6, Tenby is 40 minutes from carmarthen but nice there is the gowerwhich has some lovely spots if you like seaside. If you go through midwales you can stop round Rhyader or come down M50 and stop around Ross on Wye, Abergavenny or Monmouth, if you take the scenic route it can be lovely or can be a PITA and Fuel up before leaving! not many places to stop enroute. bruno22rf
There is a chip shop in Tenby-park road F&C-don't go there unless you want to spend the rest of your life telling people that you have eaten the best F&C in the country-or a short trip into Pembroke Dock and the Seven Spice Indian is the best I have ever eaten-we spent a week in the area and were amazed at the quality of some of the restaurants. Dirty Harry
I went M50 and Heads of the Valleys road Friday before last on the way to the Gower. I was on the M50 for 9am and it was quite quiet. Avoid the M4 as much as possible.

Regards Hcc Mate i have to confess i looked at your profile and saw chester so i suggested a route from chester to carmarthen(basically straight down) now i have put my specs on i can see your location properly, the m50 route you suggest is what i would use,but there are road works on the m50 with 40mph restrictions as we speak there is slow traffic for 5.4km between j1 and 2 according to tomtom http://www.routes.tomtom.com/#/map/?center=51.259995%2C-2.1875&zoom=9&map=basic As suggested the route through mid wales can be slower but the scenery makes up for it,i run up to ormskirk for my son in uni and i like the mountain route. Severn spice is my local and is good food. but 40 minutes from carmarthen, but there is a travelodge 200 yds away(pembroke dock) if the st clears is full. Brown Sauce
I'd avoid the M4 around Newport on a Friday from 4.00pm onwards and then around Port Talbot from 5.00pm, chuffing grid lock and if some unfortunate has a prang, forget it!!! Branch off onto the heads of the valleys, much nicer. Narbeth is a lovely little town and only 20mins from Carmarthen, some nice shops and places to eat. Enjoy your visit.
