ljaddy12
Hi all i refinished one of my old side by sides stock and new butt plate, more sentimental than any thing else its got the kind of action with no engraving or blacking so its just silver cheap but cracking pigeon gun. I thought other day would it be possible to black or finish the action with the burning effect like some have from new to dull it of and take the shine out, cold blue does not touch it,gives the desired effect then wipes off so im assuming it stainless or alloy construction, does any one know if this has to be done by a gunsmith or prior to shotgun assembly in factory if so not fussed or can it be done at home. Has anyone done it? probably a really simple answer and il feel a fool if it is but tbh im not sure and cant find info on net not even risked trying anything. subsonicnat
you will not get the effect that new guns get, its out of your league when attempting that I`m afraid: No Chance. Sorry to be so brutal, just a fact of life:
Paul223
What you refer to is called colour case hardened, look the process up and you'll see why you won't be able to recreate it to easy
welshwarrior
Colour case hardening is not easy and the action is liable to warp so not but if the action is steel it can be blacked but not really a home job.

demonwolf444
I tried it on the bottom plate of my sbs by oil bluing, but i don't think i would want to do it on the entire action, it could weaken the steel, and ruin the gun. rtaylor
I have had a lot of success blacking smaller items, bolt handles etc. just heat the metal and rub old engine oil on it. Do it a few times to build up the layers. This will come up black (like the barrels) not case hardened. I don't think it would change the shape of the action as you don't need it red hot, just hot. demonwolf444
didn't know you could build up at lower temperature!
Paul223
That method is ok for small parts but not really suitable for the action, it'll rub off quite quickly especially if the action has been hardened in the past
welshwarrior
Caustic black is really the only way to go on an action like this some of us on here have small tanks other have large scale barrel set ups.
