Fisherman Mike
Anyone tell me why the second gear on my wifes Mitsubishi is difficult to engage.? It’s just had a 50 K service and I asked them to change engine, gearbox, front and rear diff oils which they did. Driving it back from the service it now needs “effort” to change up or down into second. It seems ok when the gearbox warms up after a few miles or if I DDC or rev a little before changing. There is no graunching noise synonymous with a worn synchro. Any clues. Thanks in advance. FM By the way its one of those shrunken pajero thingys... very capable in the mud though. ! 88b
Almost certainly a synchro hub / ring , as it's ok after it warms up it could be the oil they used. I'd imagine the Mitsubishi stuff is expensive perhaps they just used EP 90 . We had a similar problem on our Galaxy when new that was a faulty synchro hub. scutt
ask the garage what oil they used if its to heavy then it will not allow the synchro cone to work as the oil will form a barrier between the cone and the hub and so it won't stop the gear before you try to engage it .you 2nd gear may be worn a bit as you use this hub a lot but the wrong oil will make it more apparent . Fisherman Mike
Thanks guys..... they used a fully synthetic Castrol syntrans 75 w 90 recommended by Castrol and complying with the oe spec. It can only be the oil change because it was shifting as smoothly as a babys **** before. Will it improve with mileage and loss of viscosity or do you think I will need to have the synchro replaced, ? Cheers.
