Boston
Hiya, we have been looking out for a lurcher to join us ferreting and have been offered a Bull (english) Greyhound cross. We have been told it is nice and leggy with a long snout but know nothing about this mixed breeding. I was wondering if any body had any pictures and knowledge of this breed working with ferrets? It is a 3 month old pup, does any body keep this with kids, cats and ferrets happily? Thanks for any advice given...
Paul in North Lincs.
A greyhound, bull cross is a recognised breed to lurchermen......how it will turn out will depend on the greyhoung / bull ratio.....We've always had 3/4 greyhound; 1/4 bull which gives an beautifull looking beast with the height and stature of the greyhoung with a slightly bulkier appearance and heavier head...(more crunch................) Before the ban they they were used to take 'all' quarry'...prodominently a strong coursing dog for larger gear. Good all rounder, abit on the heavy side for most lurcher lads, but effective all the same.....Luckily they possess the gentle nature of the GH, but are demons when working. Boston
Thank you for answering, but in the end, we thought against it not knowing enough about the temp of this cross breeding - as we have young children it pays to be careful. For now we will remain on the look out and reading articles. We are after a family pet that an animal respecting 5 year old can get on with, that is settled at home and gentle, small that will work well with ferrets as we are only after rabbits. We work mostly banks and dence covered areas. What breed mixed lurcher would suggest please? It was suggested a Bedlington cross whippet... Thanks for the help
new to the flock
Boston, I really do not know alot concerning Lurchers. I had the use of a very nice Greyhoundx through a friend of mind until he moved. A cracking dog that I did manage to course a few bunnies with . Any other knowledge I have has come from some of the dog boys and girls on here and the Moochers site. I would agree with you that you made the correct choice on passing on the Bull x Greyhound in my opinion. Not for temperment reason, but as I think that that perticular cross excells in the fox and muntjac control and is just too heavily boned and bited for short burst close brush rabbit work. Now that is just my personall opinion, and many may not agree with it. I think that you would do very well with a Collie x Greyhound x Greyhound or a Collie x Whippet. The Beddlington x Whippet should also make a cracking little rabbiting dog for working with ferrets and would be a smart looking dog. What ever you decide Good Luck and enjoy the adventure. Boston
Thank you... It is hard making the right choice when you have such a large mixture out there. But it seams Bed x Whip seams to be a popular responce when ever I talk about what we would like it for.
Paul in North Lincs.
A friend of uses only collie wippet x bedlington.........................dynamite. Saying that wippets, and beddlington terriers will both work exceptionally well on rabbits, and are only small breeds of dog.. I would advise getting a puupy from good working stock, at least that way they will grow up with the kids.............................many good breeders of lurcher can be found in the 'Countrymans Weekly' paper
