Ferret Master
Nice pup. I expect he will enjoy hunting rats and rabbits. All the mice will have to be accidental though until the hunting act is lifted as they aren't exempt under the act. FM

MC
Nothing will work fast when it comes to training, it is all persistance. Just keep your eye on him and when he starts to circle or look for somewhere to go pick him up and take him outside. At night or when you are out put newspaper down, over time gradually reduce the area covered by the paper. He will soon learn that he has to go outside. Also teach a command with it, I tell Merlin to "Go Quickly" and he will almost go on command. Don't look for a quick fix as it wont happen. BUT he seems to miss the newspaper 9 times out of 10. also he crys for me when i leave the room?? when i go back in he acts like ive been gone for a year and starts to jump up on me and lick wag his tail and greet me, is this normal? he sleeps allot aswell, i play fetch, he runs after his toy and grabs it, but he trys to take it to where he wants instead of bringing it back to me? Has anyone got any good tips to get him to bring it to me? thanks
deeksofdoom
If you want to get the dog to play fetch, go into the hall or a corridor sit onthe ground with the pup, throw the toy, when he picks it up call him back to you in a excited voice, when/if he does come back to you let him play with the toy for a while then take it gently from his mouth. In the hall he has no place to run to its just straight out and back. http://forums.pigeonwatch.co.uk/forums/ind...showtopic=25803 He sleeps a lot because he is a pup. If he's peeing on the floor its because you haven't left him out often enough, leave him out after a food/drink or after a sleep, don't rub his nose in it, he's only a pup, he doesn't know any better! you'll just have to be patient with him. Cute pup by the way!

Wait till he's older and stronger. Talk to the breeder, get over the puppy stage first!

Jack Russells can get quite saucy if you tease them e.g. catching him by the snout etc. Make sure that when you tell him to do something that he does it, teach him the word No. Talk to NTTF. Cheers mate, that does make allot of sence when you think about it, i will put it on him tomorrow, its abit late now, but will defo give that idea a whirl!! he has bit me a few times but i have took it just as him play fighting with me, it doesnt hurt or anything, he starting to learn what NO means now, also i think he knows what drop means aswell, the COME command works for abit then he totally ignores it when hes occupied with something that he finds interesting, he seems to contract the hickups every so often, not all the time but ive noticed it? hes done it a few times after play, and when hes been left for a alone for a while, is this normal behavier? thanks for all your help people, i am putting it all to use. Elite Trigger
Cheers. i have taken him into the lobby/hallway and tryed to teach him fetch, he runs after his toy and grabs it and stays down the other end away from me with it in his mouth? when i call him, he drops the toy and comes to me? how do i get him to bring the toy back to me without dropping it half way before he gets to me or even fighting with it and coming straight back without his toy? i am staring to wonder if he is half house trained as he is going the toilet in the same place? but one place for a pee and another for a poo... new to the flock
Cheers. i have taken him into the lobby/hallway and tryed to teach him fetch, he runs after his toy and grabs it and stays down the other end away from me with it in his mouth? when i call him, he drops the toy and comes to me? how do i get him to bring the toy back to me without dropping it half way before he gets to me or even fighting with it and coming straight back without his toy? i am staring to wonder if he is half house trained as he is going the toilet in the same place? but one place for a pee and another for a poo... Okay first off this is a puppy.....You are not trying for a trained retrieve at this point ....all you are doing is trying to get him interested in play retrieving and bringing things back to you. No sitting, no waiting, no marking nothing but fun. When in the hallway either sit your butt on the floor or get down on your knees. Roll the ball or tyed sock back and forth on the floor between your hands to get the pups interest. Once the pup is interested toss the toy around 15 feet. When the pup goes out after it tell him.....good puppy, good boy in a nice high excited voice. Once he picks it up dont be calling him ....just pat the floor with your hands and tell him good boy, thata puppy all in a high excited voice. When he gets back to you praise him some more and do not try to take his toy right away let him prance and play with it for 1 minute to 2 minutes....this is his reward for a job well done. Secondly this is a puppy ............. For house breaking, if he eats take him out, if he sleeps take him out as soon as he wakes up, if he has been playing 10 or 15 minutes take him out, if he has not been out for 1/2 an hour take him out. Tell him to go pee or make a mess when you take him out so he learns to go on command. Remember to praise him when he goes so that he knows he has done correct. At night take his water and food away around 7pm, give him his last outs around 10 or 11pm be sure that his crate is fitted to him....enough roon to lay down comfortably and to turn around, any more and he will use part of it for a toilet. At night when you put him to bed, you put him in walk away and ignore the noise.....DO NOT go back to console him . THirdly this is a puppy......change the setting at the bottom of this page from 30 days to show all and read back through all the pages. Enjoy and remember to keep it Fun Dan
Elite Trigger
thanks dan, this is working great, aslong as i dont try to take his toy away when hes on his way back and i tap the floor and say good boy, he comes to me with it everytime, it took about 6 trys and on the 7 he started to bring it back to me, am shocked hehe, thanks allot mate, hes gone to sleep now lol.. great stuff!! at the moment he isnt allowed out, he is due his first set of needles on thursday and then the other set 3 wees after his first, the vet has said hes not allowed out until 1 week after he has had all of his injections. my girl friend with not let me get a crate for him? and he isnt alowed outside as i have explained above, is there another way to house train him without the crate or letting him outside? sorry if i have confused anyone here! thank you Liam
new to the flock
You are okay taking the pup outside your back door to the garden to pee. Just dont have him running around outside where he can come in contact with alot of other dogs or animals. However if this is the case and you are not going to take him outside to house break him, then considering his size and the size he will be when grown up I would litter box train him. Use a good quality clumping litter that will not track around the house and a litter pan that will fit him. Then carry on with the training in the exact same way using the litter box instead of outside. As for the crate, I am a firm believer that all dogs should be crate trained. Explain to your Girl Friend that if the dog needs to spend time at the vets in the future, or needs to be restricted do to an injury, or for safe transport in the car, or if you decide to travel and he needs to be flown than he will not be tramitised if he is already trained to the crate and knows what to expect.
