jimdfish
On Thursday morning by Manchester airport flicks of two hundred pigeon were consistently flying high over my permission. After twenty or so of these flocks they stopped. Didn't see a a single pigeon then all day. Very strange

pigeon controller
We have this on a few of our farms , the birds leave the warmth of the city and travel out to feed . This time of year with the acorn crop you can set up pre dawn close to the oak trees and have approx sixty to eighty in an hour then it just stops. When I was working a could not shoot DB would go and be back at work for ten with sixty birds in the bag. It's a brilliant way to follow the flightline to see where they are feeding. goober
Could these flocks be migrating birds from Scandinavia?we usually see large numbers over Cardiff/Newport around these times.(see "do pigeons migrate?" on this forum)
pigeon controller
Could these flocks be migrating birds from Scandinavia?we usually see large numbers over Cardiff/Newport around these times.(see "do pigeons migrate?" on this forum) They may be migrating birds but they have to rest and feed . I do not feel that they can fly from Scandinavia to the Southern Mediterranean without topping up. When they are shot in Greece they are still plump. I was once told that pigeon can go three days without food but then must feed. I do not know if that is true.
Penelope
That would be about right given their high metabolic rate. They may be migrating birds but they have to rest and feed .
