Imported Vehicle Insurance

I have a 94 Pajero and having just renewed and had a premium added again for it being an import I thought I'd ask why they do this and the insurance call centre zombie was unable to advise, does anyone know why you pay extra for a grey import? I know the likelihood is just the insurers are happy to get more cash any way they can but is there a reason other than that? They are subject to same MOT's etc as an official import so can't be more likely to have claims? Is it something of a cartel with the car makers to protect their right to import vehicles to sell us?

I'd think because it's an excuse to charge more, however some things on imports like a Pajero are different to the uk spec model so in theory could cost more or be difficult to obtain . That could run into higher costs for a loan car etc. I had a similar problem with my Harley, at the time I bought it that particular model wasn't available in Europe, it had been and is now, so I did a personal import from Texas. The insurance told me that model is an import, once I pointed out they all are they didn't argue, perhaps I was lucky.

Try Dave brewer of 4x4 specialist insurance. He is a broker that main deals in modified 4x4. Imports are fine. My insurance use to be £134 full comp. The only thing they want is it modified for off road. You don't use ncb and your covered for driving around the farms.

Pm if you need more info.

I'm nothing other than a happy user that Dave has looked after for the last 5 years

This was my old occupation insurance - imports cost us more and it was a combination of parts prices and delays in sourcing stuff. Nearly everyone wants a hire car (especially when your import is hit up the rear for eg) and cost here rises as veh off road longer. Accident Management companies add to cost too - they know they can spin things out but don't get me started on that topic.
