Id like a decent off road vehicle for shooting mainly and also next year when I can drive id like to use it on the road,so if I got an mot fail disco for example im guessing the costs would be a lot? Also looking at a defender. Would the insurance be a lot and would it cost to run it everyday to college ect?as with going shooting?

Hi Josh

Whats your budget? You can get a disco with tax and test and in reasonable nick for £1000-£1500, defender you are looking minimum 4k for anything worth having. Both a tdi disco or defender will give about 25-30mpg.

Your main issue will be insurance, recently on the landy zone forum someone was looking for defender as a first car and best price for insurance alone was about 3.5k.

Even the smaller 4x4s like Suzuki are still quite expensive on insurance and fuel wise not much better than the diesel landrovers.

Im in the same boat as you in a way, Im driving next year but I only have small permissions at the moment so no need for a 4x4 or car even, But when I used t shot with a friend he had about 1500 acres to shoot over with the air rifle, allot of people on here will laugh but as long as it is reasonably dry and you keep on flat land then his 2010 Vauxhall corsa did the job, only jot stuck when we managed to get the front wheel down an open drain. Plus if you are shooting out of the vehicle in my mind a little hatch back will be allot quieter and less intimidating than a loud disco :) But obviously you will be limited as to where you can go.

If i get any larger permission which I hope to then I will just be using my VW Polo to get to take all the equipment ect up for a hide I think, plus small car like that are cheaper to insure and I get about 70 mpg :)

You wouldn`t go far wrong with a Mitsubishi Shogun or Pajero 2.8 TD not the 2.5 TD. :good:

There`s that many of them you can get a good one for sensible money.

The Pajero is usually an import. And a lot of insurance companies can load them. :sad1:

Another way to go would be an old Land Rover and put it on Classic Insurance. :yahoo:

Looking at quotes as we speak. But being a kid getting sidetracked with Nissan Skylines ect! Any thourghts on the quad idea? Also looked at discos! I was thinking just to buy an mot fail disco run it on red just for my permissions but when I want to get more permission it would mean running on the road to get there! Suzuki viataras look quite good off road? anyone got any thoughts on them?

It was me looking for defender insurance and I got down to £1250, way cheaper than I could get for stuff like corsa's, clio's etc.

I got a mechanically solid defender in need of a general service but with some shabby bits of body work like the odd rust spot and one door was leaking water but it's fairly easier to fix that with some ingenuity lol.

I'm running the 19j 2.5 turbo Diesel engine from 1989 and getting about 25mpg

Hope this helps

viagras are good little motors! if your considering a 4x4 of that size the toyota rav 4 is a cracking little motor espesially if you can find a import that has the central locking diff!! ive seen one go a lot of places with ease that my old hi-lux would have scrabed to get through! but then you have the insurance issue being an import another small 4x4 would be the daihatsu sportrak all of these are small petrol 4x4 i think the rav is a 1.8 the others are 1.6's if memory serves! all eaisly under 1000 most arround 400-700 a quad is great but you wont get much worth having for under 1500 if you do loads of road mile you will eat tyres and its cold and wet in the winter, if all of your shooting land is connected then your best bet is get a little cheap run arround and get a old mot failure viagra for arround 200 and just just that on the farm land? or old disco that you could run on red? and dont bother with skylines (unless its a gtr) the gts-t's are a bit of a let down! :good:

My 1984 cost £126 a year fully comp !! Not the fastest but I gets me there ... There's been a hatch in roof to shoot from ;-)

It's solely a shooting bus so mpg arnt too important but I'll eventually put a 200 or v8 into it ....

They are marmite you love them or hate them but they are good fun
