pg123
Just wonder how people have gone on releasing ducks on to a river. We have a small pond on our diy shoot that we put 50 duck on this season. At the other side of the shoot is a small river and we have already discussed releasing another 50 straight on to the river next season. Any one put their ducks on a river? What are the pros & cons of this? Thanks.
pestcontrol1
9 times out of 10 they will ****** off up or down the river you would be better off just feeding the river and hope some wild ducks come and then do it as a drive
r1steele
I used to release ducks onto ponds and the river. It all depends what sort of river and where about's you are situated. A good friend of mine releases around 3000 straight onto the river and hasn't had any real problems apart from a few years ago when a summer flood took a few. pg123
The river is nothing major and is only about 20 ft wide in the main. In most places it can be crossed with wellies on if you are careful. We have been feeding it this year to draw in a few wild ones. We have seen mixed results with 5 - 10 duck sat on the water but not every shoot day.
scotslad
I'd tend to agee with pestcontrol althou it all depends on the exact situation. Can u easily drive them off the river and get the guns in place. It may work in some situations but would not in others. For the small numbers ur talking about could probably argue both ways either not worth the hassle or only a samll number so not going to bankrupt u if goes wrong. Could be a success 1 year and disaster the next if big flood shortly after u release them. If the pond has went well this season and shown decent birds (not the biggest fan of released duck shooting) mibee worth putting the extra on it and just feeding the river
filzee
We have a pond that is a stones throw away from the Trent. We don't release any birds presently but just feed the pond and we generally get around 60 Mallard on it. We will be releasing some for next season as its good to put some back. pg123
Our pond can easily cope with 100 so may look at releasing then on pond to start with and then start feeding river as well and try to split them nearer the season. Will see what other guns think.
