mancub
Happy new year folks; hope it will be a good one all round! I am organising a trip over to Cyprus in April and wondered whether you have any top tips and guidance regarding permits, airline experiences, best cases for guns etc?? Many thanks. TIGHTCHOKE
Decent lockable cases are a must. Buy your ammo over there. Have fun

PhilR
You'll need a European Firearms Permit from your police firearms dept. I've flown into Larnaca several times with no problems can't remember which airlines with though. Check out the airlines websites to see whether they carry guns. Easyjet do and the process with them is straightforward, most problems occur with check in staff being unaware of their own company procedures. Don't take cartridges it's more trouble than it's worth and eats into your baggage allowance. Make sure your gun is insured, as sporting equipment, isn't covered sufficiently by carriers. welshwarrior
As above good hard case EFP and don't take a semi auto there banded. I was posted over there and took my guns back and forth BA are the best airline to deal with but the flight cost more and charge more for the guns. Easy jet is fine but not nice if doing it regularly found the extra admin a pain but not hard.
mancub
PhilR, WelshWarrior. Some useful advice, many thanks lads. Keep it coming please! Are there any regs about what sort of case to use?
PhilR
No an ABS case should be fine. I say should as on one trip back from Spain in 2002 the baggage handlers had, so it seemed, dragged my Perazzi ABS case along the tarmac behind the little baggage tractor and trailer. I reported the case damage and then when I declared the gun at Customs I noticed the Essevierre custom made Perazzi stock was broken through the hand. Went back to report the extra damage and the bloke almost laughed at me and said it was my insurer's problem. Fortunately NFU were understanding and paid for the replacement stock and my trip back to Italy to get it made. I've got a much more substantial guncase for airline travel now but it weighs a ton. I've shot abroad frequently for more than 20 years and the damage that occurred to my stock is the only one I know of even amongst my foreign shooting competitors. Just unfortunate I guess. I would suggest fitting out any case used is packed out with dense foam to ensure the gun parts are well supported within the case. I think Willpoon has done something similar and there's a thread on here somewhere about it.
Will Poon
I recently got a Peli Storm im3100 case http://www.waterproof-cases.co.uk/product/peli-storm-im3100-case/ Fantastic case as it's waterproof and has an air vent built into it to it. I take it everywhere with me. The last photo is where I placed the guns and equipment ontop of the foam ready to be outlined with a black feltip pen. Then get an electric kitchen knife to cut it out. 2 tips for you if you want to get a similar type of case where you need to cut the foam. Firstly let the knife do the work as it will cut a nice smooth edge if you don't pull with the knife Secondly as you can see in my pictures my guns are stored vertically in the case as in the rib is protruding and the forend is buried in the foam, make sure you cut deep enough in the foam so the forend chequering doesn't get crushed when the lid is closed
welshwarrior
As above I used a peli case as they are hard as nails never had any damage. Expensive but cheaper than the 2 guns in it. Heavy but the planes strong.

Delboy316
Depends on which place in Cyprus your going? Im guessing Greek side as the North side of Cyprus wont be having hunting season at those times. Another thing - wear a thick pair of boots - they have blunt nose vipers in Cyprus, very deadly snake. Black snake you have no worres about but the vipers are dangerous

Traztaz
Used to get loads of snakes where I lived in Tala near Paphos, shooting was good in thoes days too, that said I am talking about nearly 25 years ago. I take it you are off to shoot clays? I understood from my last visit there a while back that game shooting was all but dead as the average Cypriot would shoot at everything and anything, including road signs if there was nothing else about!! Delboy316
more chance of getting hit by a car because Turks and Greeks out there drive like a bunch of brainless donkeys. as Traztaz said - the Cypriots shoot everything - even when hunting season is over my cousins go out with sticks to catch Hares out there. Hares meat taste much better in Cyprus than they do in England. I come across a lot of snakes, dead and alive. Including some partridges.
