Taylor01
Hello, could someone please offer advice with regards to SGC. I have recently applied for one and I'm a member of the Armed Forces. My question is I understand if I stored my future shotgun (hopefully Silver Pigeon 1) in the unit armoury I should be ok with gaining the certificate, but I'm concerned about access out of routine hours and was thinking about joining a local gun club and hire their storage facility. Would this be acceptable for the police check? Just for info I have just recently moved to the area and live in the mess, so do not have the option of fitting a cabinet. Gunnerbob
Hi and welcome from Suffolk.... ...another possibility would be to store your gun with a local rfd. I know that my feo was interested in where the gun was stored with regard to how readily and easily it would be put away securely after use.... steve_b_wales
Welcome to PW. Firearms can be stored somewhere other than your home, but access to them must only be by yourself.
HDAV
Sounds daft but you may need a cabinet in the armoury.... Despite the hundreds of CF rifles pistols and grenade launchers the armourer can't have access to your shotgun...... Daft isn't it..... wymberley
Could you define, "mess"? the RN is different from the army and RAF. I've stored a 22 - 250 and shotguns in different RAF armouries and withdrawn them and the ammunition for use during working hours and returned them at the earliest possibility consistent again with working hours - whether it be midweek or weekend. When not in use they were locked in my RAF Sgt's Mess bunk and chained to a convenient point on the central heating out of sight of the window if appropriate. Everyone who needed to know about/approve this was happy so no problems.

Despite the hundreds of CF rifles pistols and grenade launchers the armourer can't have access to your shotgun...... Daft isn't it..... That isn't necessarily the case. The NRA hold many peoples rifles, shotguns and pistols, spares and ammo at its armoury, the armourer fundamentally has full access to them all, they actually offer a storage facility. It will depend on the situation and/or what qualification/pieces of paper the armourer holds, and the odds are it will be fine. In the unlikely event it will not be acceptable for the armourer to have access to the shotgun, may I suggest it will be extremely unlikely that storage will be available in the armoury, the services are unlikely to allow a whole load of cabinets and oiks access to the armoury as they chose with no access to the guns themselves! I suspect either or both will be acceptable to the Police, the simple fact is that either option may well present you with access issues to your shotgun. Just the same the only people who can confirm this are your Police region!
HDAV
I thought the NRA facilities were a civilian RFD which HMF armourers aren't Welsh warrior is best to ask if army as he has been there done that not sure on RAF or RN. Security is the responsibility of the cert holder a cabinet is the usual means but others may be accpetable. Best talk to FEO and if the gun can't be returned to the armoury due to working hours then you have the appropriate measures in place. Taylor01
Thank you all for the very useful advice. I think it may be best if I speak to the FEO when he comes to visit. Having conducted various Orderly Officers checks there are personal firearms in the armoury, however they are abused by the nosey Orderly Officer or the armoury staff and it would wind me up seeing it covered in sticky paw prints, and the fact I would only be using it at weekends so would have the problem of what to do with it out of hours, however it is still better than paying £18 per month for storage fees at Bisley. Wymberley - It is a Army Officers Mess (although I'm not a true Rupert, I'm a LE). I cant see the QM letting me drill raw plugs in the room and attaching a gun cabinet.
