Rossi46
Hi all, I am going to buy my first shotgun next week and was going to get a 12g o/u sporting model for clay shooting, this was my plan till yesterday when I was talking to my neighbour (farmer) who was moaning about the pigeons on his rape fields. To cut story short he gave me permission to shoot them, so my question is if I get a 12g o/u field gun instead of the sporter will I notice loads more recoil at the clay ground with it being a lighter gun. Any advise welcome
duster
Simple! Buy an auto instead. 3 shots, less recoil than a O/U and it'll still shoot clays. New Escorts come in at £275, M/C with 3" chamber. Can't go wrong at that.
Highlander
You might not notice much difference in recoil BUT most clay shooting guns are heavier. If you stand behind a shooter having a go at say simultanious going away birds with a lightweight gun you'll see why...muzzle flip!
luckytrigger
If your gonna do a lot of hide/pidgeon shooting buy a remi 1100.. reliable and cheap
Browning
If the majority of your shooting is going to be clays, then I would stick with the sporting model. You won't gain all that much in weight advantage if you go for an O/U field gun, so it's no problem with carrying it around in the field. Also, you tend to find you have more choice of make, model, barrel length etc with sporting models.
Rossi46
Cheers lads thanks for your opinions, I understand what you are saying about the auto's but I really want a o/u. I went to my local dealer today a had a feel of a beretta white onyx (field model), they did not have it in a sporter so I could not compare them together although they did have a browning b525 sporter which felt quite a bit heavier than the beretta. I've always shot everything clays vermin and game with a Beretta Silver pigeon and been fine

Gordon R
I've had a few Brownings - AI, B325 x2, F1, XT Ultra, GTi and a B525 Sporter. Liked them all except the 525. Shot it once and got rid. Horrible pistol grip. Still got a GTi - different class.
al4x
Mines a 687 with 28inch barrels multi choke. I've tried longer barrels but for an all rounder I find I shoot better with the 28's.
njc110381
I have a silver pigeon s field. It has 28" barrels and multi chokes. I shoot both clays and vermin and find it a very nice, comfortable gun. It recoils slightly harder than a 682 clay gun, as this is the only other beretta I've used to compare it to. It's not enough to be a problem though, and the light weight is welcome when hauling it around the farm all day! I often shoot over 100 28g shells, and don't notice it on the shoulder. If you are recoil shy, or more keen on clays, go for a sporter. Otherwise, a field version is fine
