Grandalf
Gandalf you are not the only one getting better results with steel compared with hevi shot. Since they started making round pellets ( the old pellets were all shapes ) they seem to have gone downhill.I suspect the lighter loads no not have sufficent pattern.Still as they have stopped importing them thats all in the past. Yep, it's a pattern issue for sure. Do you understand it that they have gone forever? I hadn't heard that. The 100 or so that I have left were purchased before the 12/13 season. Does this mean they will become collectors items? Will I be rich?

I believe they have just stopped importing at the moment.
Grandalf
Thanks for that. I don't think I will be buying any more. I suppose the real change to my set up is the Patternmaster choke. It makes one hell of a difference but the Gamebore Mammoth is a very good cartridge too.
anser2
Glad the choke is working well for you Grandalf. I think some have been a bit sceptical about my posts on afterchokes and steel before , but they do make a hell of a difference. i suspect the main problem for many with steel is that they treat it like lead and its so difrerent to use in pratice. Shot sizes , cartridge speed and choke are all so much more important , but get the balance and it does the job well.
Grandalf
Best pattern I achieved was Remmington 3.5" No 1 at 40 yards. 3 pellets only out of the 30" circle - Just (.25") - Awesome. The Mammoth BB are not so tight but the knockdown is impressive. I don't have their tightest choke but I will have one for next season. Designed specifically for steel shot they work in a totally different way to a conventional choke - But work they do. Got to shoot straight though. Due the concentration of pellets, not streamed, it's hit or miss. But if you hit you kill.
kent
I was very sceptical about after market chokes but the Kicks I fitted to the 12 ga is very good (its modified as I still don't believe in over choking steel). The patterns it produces are very dense and it can and does out pattern the shot velocity when using Gamebore mammoth number 3 shot 3". You see the duck take a good centre pattern hit (you know those type of hits when you see them it almost blows them backwards and turns them over then it comes down wounded, so I wound it back in and settled for slightly better kills at the shorter more normal range. It does however give a tangible edge if you get a silly goose get to close to the duck shell

kent
Thanks for all your help guys, so moving in from this, what are good aftermarket chokes available for a maxus? Myself I like the modified from Kicks. It will pattern as tight as you need it and that is so far that your cartridge cannot match its ability as regards energy. I use it in an SX3 which is basically the same FN made gun wrapped up a little different. Ported chokes are noisy however, watch the dog and your own ears
