-Mongrel-
Fairly valid point, and, if you don't try, you definitely won't get. Worth a read and a signature if you feel so inclined. https://submissions.epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/48869
Malik
It works out cheaper for some but would it work out cheaper for all? Plenty of bikes have more grunt than a toyota aygo
-Mongrel-
It's not about grunt mate, it's emissions based. Most bikes are quicker than most cars.
Malik
I know, its just that power and emissions don't tend to go together. It probably is cheaper, i am not saying its not. I just think if you work out all motorcycles it may not be cheaper for some. A lot of guys chuck away the original exhaust systems on their bikes (which removes the chunky heavy Cat) remap, o2 sensor eliminators all for sound and performance. Emissions being the last thing on their minds lol
-Mongrel-
Tax bands are set on the manufacturers emission figures though aren't they? In which case a modification is immaterial....until MOT time.
bruno22rf
I've signed it but my bike does way less than 40mpg so I guess I cannot complain.
safc1973
Signed - bikes take up less space than cars so tax should be less (until they change the name to "Emissions Tax"
Malik
if the petition is going on the current emission based tax system... Although he doesn't state what age his bike is 2013 Honda VFR - 155.9 CO2 g/km putting it in tax band G will mean he will pay £175 for his 600cc+ bike and not £78 for 12 months For more examples 2013 Yamaha R1 - 165.4 CO2 g/km. which would put it in emission bands G-H, means the road tax goes from £78 pounds for 12 months to £175-£200 2013 Honda Fireblade - 133.2 CO2 g/km. which would put it in emission band E, means road tax would be £125 for 12 months. My Yamaha R6 2013 - 136.4 CO2 g/km goes from the 600cc rate of £57 for 12 months to £125 for 12 months?!!!!!! Thats only a few examples i know but there are plenty of big bikes out there ranging from supersport to the harley type custom cruisers. New bikes with electronic fuel systems and Cats etc to old bikes with Carbs and straight through pipes. The examples i gave are the newest and most efficient systems. I don't think it would save the majority any money unless you are a moped/scooter rider, in which case your tax would go from £17 for 12 months to £0 Edit - thats the tax bands if anyone is interested https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-tax-rate-tables Edited February 7, 2014 by Malik
Catweazle
I'm not sure this is sensible. My bike puts 130bhp onto the road through a contact patch much smaller than a car tyre, and does about 35mpg whilst carrying one person. It eats tyres and probably does more environmental damage than a small car.
