ditchman
is it really benificial for an intercooler to be fitted to a 200tdi defender engine..........in this climate (UK) does it really make a difference to cool the inlet air even further, at the general speeds a defender runs at ? will the 200tdi run just as well without it your thoughts please ditch
Rushjob
Yes it is needed, if you fit a larger one you really notice the difference so they do have an effect here. Without one it'll either run like a bag of poo or not at all.
bluesj
Yes you need the inter cooler as the passage of the air through to turbo heats it making it less dense so less oxygen per cylinder full so less fuel can be burned so less power
ditchman
so what is the primary job of the intercooler...to cool the air, and or act as a pressurised reservoir of air for the instant demand of the intake......or both.....does anyone know what the temperature drop is on a defender intercooler from airintake to entering the cylinders not trying to catch anyone out. just trying to get my head around what i need to do ditch

The heat coming out of the turbo will be too hot for the engine.
Matt_
Asif it wasn't enough heat just from the exhaust gases etc from the turbo, as you compress air it also hears up... Intercoolers are a vital piece of engine equipment for forced induction engines, removing it you with have less dense air (colder air is more dense) there for you will be running rich and the gasses will be phenomenally hot without an intercooler that you will lose a lot of power and there's a very slight possibility of causing damage to your engine. Your intercooler cools the hot air from the turbo (think of it as a air radiator if you will) Matt
ditchman
thanks for the feed back you guys...............intercooler it is..........when i take delivery of my scrap engine i will post a blow by blow account of the re-build and fitting into the old gal cheers again ditch
Paul223
Your fuel injection pump is set up with the intercooler in mind, the warm air from the turbo will be less dense and would require less fuel, lots of older vehicles run with no intercooler, the benifit is less turbo lag, the downside less power. Yes you can run it direct but your fueling will be a mess, it'd be easier to run with the cooler, there is enough space for it
