Cosd
Watched an episode of "How It's Made" (Discovery Channel) last night where they showed how a Purdey is made. All I can say is "WOW" Over 500 man hours to produce one gun, the craftsmanship and attention to detail is incredible. Minimum 5 years experience to carry out any of the tasks involved in the making of the gun. Anyone else see it? Guessing it's a repeat..... Hamster
I find the whole series riveting, unbelievable how some items are made from start to finish.

TriBsa
You just jogged my memory about a film of gun making in 1956 Cosd, so I've just posted it as a seperate topic. Can't risk a hijacking charge as a newbie. Tom

Gunman
Best that most people only get to see the best bits .Keeps the magic alive if the punter doesn't see the welding torch and the big hammer.

Gunman
Another point did you see the guns ? No multi chokes , No recoil reducers or adjustable stocks .I bet non had 32" barrels or 3.5" chambers . How did people in those days actually manage to shoot at and hit anything . JohnfromUK
Without wishing to belittle in any way the skills of Purdey's and other craftsmen today, the real wonder to me is how absolutely beautifully guns were made entirely by hand before the advent of modern machinery such as NC milling machines, spark erosion etc. Late 19th and early 20th century best guns were largely hand filed - and to a level of perfection every bit as good as anything made today - regardless of price I am proud to own and use one or two of these fantastic pieces of craftsmanship Edited March 5, 2014 by JohnfromUK
