mick miller
These claims of 200 and 300 yards are misleading. Are we talking 'I can see eye shine but cannot tell if it's a fox, rabbit, hare, courting couple on 5 times mag at 300 yards' or are we talking 'I can see a rabbit and it's looking to the left and scratching it's ear on 12 times mag at 300 yards and I'm comfortable taking the shot because I can see the next 50 yards behind it clearly'? I only ask as I had the ns200 for a long time, and frankly, if you wanted to try and shoot stuff beyond 140 yards you were simply shooting at a pair of eyes. I'd be amazed if the nite-eye were really that much better. Edited March 27, 2014 by mick miller

mick miller
It'll do that certainly. I just wanted to question some of the range claims of kit.
fox slayer
Hi i also would like to know more about the range of the kit in question, may be happyshooter can tell us more about it as he has used one.

Dekers
As with all products there will be a variety of opinion. Scope type/quality, focus of scope/NiteSite, weather conditions, etc etc all come into this. I consider 300yards to be optimistic for sure, but I have used my NS200 in the area of 200 yards several times, and I'm shooting accurately at quarry, not a blurred pair of glowing eyes! Yes, but at what mag? The unit I made allows you to shoot at 200 yards at x20 and clearly distinguish eyes, shape, direction and background / backstop for a further 50 yards minimum on a rabbit sized target. That means it is possible to actually safely shoot at those ranges. X5 mag is useless, as the cross hairs completely cover the target. The best you can hope for is a shoot and pray approach at a body shot. I would think no one tries to shoot rabbits at those ranges anyway but for foxing you may want to and perhaps a little further. I had two ns200's neither of them provided anywhere near that type of clarity at that range even on x5 mag I really must get together with happyshooter and film some comparative video as he has most units and lives pretty close. Calm down....I said........... I have used my NS200 in the area of 200 yards several times, and I'm shooting accurately at quarry, not a blurred pair of glowing eyes. What about Mag, I can use my NS200 at whatever mag the scope can handle, certainly 20x if I wanted! You are making a lot of assumptions about reticles/mag, and please, do not insinuate, "The best you can hope for is a shoot and pray approach at a body shot." and just what is wrong with shooting a bunny at 200 yards if you want? Set the NS up correctly with the right scope and 200 yards is realistic, the OP is NS50 to 200, of course there are other systems out there and some people make their own, what has that got to do with my comments? mick miller
I'm not the one getting agitated here. Frankly Dekers, if you really think that 200 yards is realistic with the NS200 on x20 mag I'm afraid I'll be calling Marmite. I've had two, no way is that possible. You sure you don't have an elastic tape measure? Either way, you carry on, I can't be bothered to argue the toss anymore. I'll get some footage done fi I can get hold of Happyshooter; genuine comparisons, same scope, same illuminator, same night, same ranges, same mags and then see where we are. You bought in 20x mag and thick reticles, I pointed out the right scope etc and it works. 20x mag also works for the NS200, that isn't an issue at all for the NS200, any magnification you likes works if the scope is capable enough, it will only be an issue for some inadequate scopes. Just because you are incapable of using a NS200 adequately out to 200 yards it doesn't mean the world can't. Just the same, I don't use 20x mag even at 600 yards, I don't need to, and I can easily put a bullet in a bunnies head at 200 yards at 6x mag, seldom do I find the need though. You crack on with whatever you like but please don't tell me what my scopes or I can do, and please do not ever suggest to me "The best you can hope for is a shoot and pray approach at a body shot." That is insulting beyond words. I don't care what you use and I don't care if it is "better", that isn't the question in this thread, and you have made some very generalised insulting comments!
