whybrow
Hi Everyone, Bought a 20G junior for the boy and having cycling issues. It is 7 days old and with Edgar Brothers as it wouldn't eject plastic or fibre wad. They assured me that it is a small issue as it was like this on day 1 and some parts on factory line are hand adjusted, therefore I assumed I gained a Friday afternoon one! In order for my 10 year old to shoot over the Easter period they sent down their review/demo shotgun, the same model. I found the following 28G plastic - cycles fine dropped a couple out of box 25, 32G cycles fine (boy cant manage recoil) 28G Eley CT 20 Fibre - Not happening on either gun, may as well have bought a single shot, Are the CT 20's renown for being dirty? I thought Eley would not produce cheap and dirty carts but if so, what would you recommend as a fibre that are known to cycle? Ideally I want to be able to cycle 24G in plastic and fibre, and Edgar Bros are assuring me that it will fire 24G+ just 21G is a hit and miss, Also use a 70mm or 76mm cart. I need a semi auto for the boy and the Hatsan was the best bet on pricing, warranty and the fact that I knew I was putting a new gun in his hands as opposed to a pre owned that I don't know the history. I don't really want to argue the fit for purpose point with Edgar Brothers because they seem adamant that the escort magnum will and does handle fibre. Any experience of the CT 20 or magnum please let me know. I am beginning to think it may well be a cart issue and not gun, Edited April 20, 2014 by whybrow
fenboy
This must be the third or fourth Hatsan not cycling thread in the last week ! To be honest I would have gone with the S/H anything else route . I cannot recommend a cartridge as I no longer shoot a 20 but its fair to say that eley are not the cartridge makers they used to be. I would try something from hull or gamebore.
whybrow
I will give these a try Fenboy, if I keep the gun. I understand that these have cycling issues if the wrong cart length is used ie. 65 or 67mm but I thought Eley Fibres wouldn't block the gas ports through being a dirty cartridge, perhaps I was mistaken in my belief in the Eley brand and they aren't exactly cheap as chips. I have the suspicion that when my one is returned from Edgar Bros this week, I will have any required tuning completed by them and should encounter no further troubles. I have made it clear if I do it will go back for a refund, or should I just go that route now as unfit for purpose? I am going to call them on Tuesday and see if they recommend a cart, and take it from there. If I do keep it I will try Hull, as I like them myself. stewartward was with us on Saturday and he could see how much of a joke it was. I fear my son will lose all interest and confidence, some carts were trying to eject and sticking out at incredible angles, we were gobsmacked at the performance. I wished I took pics! On another downside my B. Rizzini S2000 decided to cough out it last cart that day and is going back to store for refund under warranty as it must have had a fracture in metalwork (ejector and hinge stub sheared off whilst shooting) This was not the planned Easter shooting I had in mind! Overall Stew, we missed a lot and I certainly entertained you with all the shenanigans!
fenboy
I personally would give them a chance to resolve the problem , hopefully it will be fine but a number of guys on here have gone for the refund after they failed to sort things out. Its a shame because the 20 bore youth fills a bit of a gap in the market and the only other youth option would be a O/U as far as I am aware. Matastrophe
I recently bought a 20g hatsan for my partner to learn with, i tried it with some 21gram hull CT plastic wads and it cycled them absolutely fine, also took it clay shooting last week and it was fine with whatever i dug out of a mix and match box, 24gram 28 gram etc. I might just have been lucky with my hatsans as i have the 12g Xtreme and that cycles everything from hull 27gram up and the only time its has jammed since the few few weeks of 'wearing in' has been when i forgot to clean it after putting 1000 cartridges through it. The beretta hasnt left the cabinet for 9 months, took it out on saturday and judging from the performance it will be staying there for another 9 months without seeing the light of day. whybrow
Wow, Matastrophe, you are either v. lucky or I am an isolated case. I think I will give them the opportunity to put it right as recommended by Fenboy but I do need it to be able to shoot fibre. Have you shot fibre through it? If so which cart? phaedra1106
I only shoot fibre through my Escort 12g, about 12 to 15,000 over the last 7 years or so
Matastrophe
Everything i fired when i went clay shooting was a fibre, it was literally odds and **** that a friend gave me when he stopped using a 20g. I havent put hundreds through it so it is far from a conclusive test im afraid. If it any use at all i bought the gun second hand (student) and i think it is the hatsan escort PS, with the speed loader. I dont think its had many cartridges through it as the action is, if anything, tighter than my 12g which has probably had 3000 carts through it since i bought it new. I might have just been lucky as i have done some stock work for the RFD i bought the gun from and they allowed me to take it away for a weekend to test it and see if it fitted my girlfriend and to check it cycled the light loads. As has been said, i have probably shot 3000 cartridges through my 12g in since december 2012, probably 2500 of which were fibre wads. The only ones it will not cycle are light recoiling or sub-sonic cartidges, if you use 65mm carts it does also try and load two at once sometimes so i just use 67mm ones and havent had a problem since. Hope this helps and i hope you get it sorted, i think the old hatsans probably were a pile of ****, a friend had an original and it was horrible, but the new ones are brilliant, i love mine and would rather sell the beretta if push came to shove. whybrow
Thanks guys, I will hopefully get this sorted. Personally I like the 20g junior for him. Its nicely balanced and he really likes shooting it. He doesn't like the recoil on an O/U (using hull comp x) and I hope Edgar Bros can rectify any issues they find. It may be the Eley carts? Could be too soft? What fibre carts do you use or would recommend Phaedra1106? Gamebore or Hull?
bicykillgaz
My 12g escort semi would not cycle fibre wadded carts, I don't know if there's anything in it but I don't think fibre wads keep the gasses as contained in the barrel as a plastic wad so the gas doesn't port as well as it should. That's my theory anyway and I'm sticking with it. I now use an escort 20g pump-action and its a great little gun. Shame your not closer as you could of borrowed it one weekend to see how he got on with it as it's currently for sale along with 300 cartridges. whybrow
Thats what I fear, the inability to fire fibre wad. I need one that does both. Edgar Bros insist that it should. I will call them tomorrow and find out the state of play.
halfbee
My newish escort 12g only ever fires fibre, it mis-cycles maybe 2 rounds in 25 with 65mm 29g pigeon carts but don't miss a beat with cheap pigeon carts in 70mm.
phaedra1106
Mine hates Hull Comp-X as they are about 1.5mm shorter than Eley First so (as said above) they try to come out of the mag tube both together. Other than that it shoots anything else I've tried in it.
