dodeer
As i have just got a dream job, vermin controller and secruity on 400 acres with a lovely cottage and a good wage, i was thinking about getting a guard dog as you do get the ****** around here after quads etc. I know that many people wont have any experience /reason for having one but can you reccommend a breed? My thoughts were Alsation/ Doberman etc. Are these sorts of dogs better in pairs etc? :yp: Thanks

Malc
Sounds like a smashin' job Sam. As regards Guard Dogs I can speak with some experience as, some years ago, I was involved with dogs for many years in the military police. I found Alsation/GSD to be the best all round breed by far. But, as an alternative, have a look at Curly Coated Retrievers. They are the traditional Gamekeepers guard dog and will double up as a gundog too. I would advise extreme caution when using dogs for guard/security/personal protection..... Depending what you want the dog to do if you encounter an intruder/thief. It's easy to fall foul of the law. dodeer
The dog will live in a kennel and mostly be a visable and hearable detterant. I will have to do security checks around the farm and houses so will take it with me incase i bump into someone who shouldnt be there. :yp:
Quercus
Congratulations on the job sam, sounds great. I've used German Shepherds for the security aspects of work for the last ten years, and would highly recommend them. Whatever breed you go for temperament is everything. Just because the dog will be a "guard dog" doesn't mean it has to be a complete psycho. A well socialised and trained confident dog will protect you and yours just as well, without being a liability. I would advise you just to get a single dog and take the time to train it properly, rather than getting a pair and only doing half as well. Besides which, one good dog will be all that you will need. Good luck with the job and the dog. Q :yp:
dodeer
Would you reccommend a police dog which hasnt made the grade? A keeper in hursley had one ,he said that you can pick em up cheapish and are generally good dogs to have. All these big dogs seem to be bloody pricey e.g £650 for a Rottweiler, £450 Alsation at 5 months etc!

To all unwashed scum who come on my farm to steal quads and break into cottages - prepare to run

webber
I know virtually nothing about dogs. But I do know that a friend of mine once had a pair of Rotweilers stolen by gypsies, together with 3 transits and a load of bottled gas. The dogs had been specially trained as guard dogs. The one guard dog that I ever owned was poisoned, and goods stolen. We now use cctv and yard alarms with lights, reasonably effective, but you dont get any companionship or bits of burglar left behind. webber
