naddan28
Went out for a big family meal today with the my partner's family as it was her mum's birthday. So we organised a big surprise and took all the family out. I already know the uncle as its his farms I shoot with my air rifle. After having a lovely meal in the local pub. We went to trevor (the farmer i shoot on) back for a cuppa and then out came the quads! Had a quick shoot round the farm on a quad, a MF 300cc bloody hard to drive! Then trevor turns round and says "fancy shooting the shotgun to get the bloody crows?" I was yeah go on then, as i assumed he was joking around. Next minute he comes round the corner with the 12g sbs and says "come on, out here then" Bit shocked, he gave me a quick talk, safety is here etc and then unfortunately the crows had dissapeared so let it off to empty the barrell. Bloody Hell!!! It does half kick! As for the noise my ears were ringing!! Although now I am writing this grinning from ear to ear, and he has again said if i want it can buy it cheap. Now I am in a quandry as have no SGC and a mother who wont allow a gun safe at home! To top it off in july am moving away for a year, coming home for weekends but will be in another county. I reckon if I do get a SGC he would happily let me keep it in his safe, and i only shoot on the farms with him anyway so its not an issue. However, wondered where i would stand with applying for a SGC, if i got it now in kent and moved to hampshire but only ever shot in kent would i need it transferred to hamps police force or are they nationwide? Its just a shame that I am not at home for another 3yrs with a less stressed mum! When i told her i had shot the gun and was offered it for sale, she said well you cant shoot it in the garden cos lucy (the new pup) is on her way! Bless mothers! Also, I met the other 2 shooters on his land, two local bouncers bit offish but I reckon the attitude was down to the fact I shoot a non face air rifle. Bit of snobbery thats all! pin
If you will only ever shoot with him on his land then you don't need an SGC to do that, but you have to be under his supervision at all times. It gets complicated if you want to keep your guns somewhere else because one of the responsibilities the police have is knowing where registered firearms are at all times. You could in theory put your guns in his safe, but they would have to be on his ticket not yours, or you would have to satisfy the plod that he didn't have access to them for them to be on your ticket. Best way is get your SGC and he can "lend" you his guns for you to use for up to 72 hours at a time before you need to inform plod of where they are. You can then shoot without his supervision and return them to his safe at the end of the day. It will probably mean getting a cabinet but you could get a small cheap one with the full intention of never actually putting a gun in it. Mum would be happy since there wouldn't be a SG in the house.. Just my view..

Markio
Mate, if you ears are ringing then gets some ears plugs!! Cheap crappy foam in the ear jobs works a treat. It's not worth damaging your hearing for. *Gets off soap box*. Hope you manage a suitable arrangement with your mum and the farmer.
naddan28
Thanks Markio but it was a bit of a shock to me, didn't expect him to casually offer me a go on the shotgun. If i end up with it and my ears do ring then i will defenatly invest in some ear defenders/plugs!
Poacher
Thanks Markio but it was a bit of a shock to me, didn't expect him to casually offer me a go on the shotgun. If i end up with it and my ears do ring then i will defenatly invest in some ear defenders/plugs! Get ear defenders first . You won't get accustomed to the loud bang, you may think you are but in actual fact you're gradually get deafer and deafer !!! You may not notice it instantly, but just take a look at some of the duffers on this site and you'll soon see what a deaf *** sounds like. joke :yp:

naddan28
thats why the farmer doesn't always hear me! I just thought it was my lack of a country accent.
Lurch
It will probably mean getting a cabinet but you could get a small cheap one with the full intention of never actually putting a gun in it. Mum would be happy since there wouldn't be a SG in the house.. If you aren't getting a gun then you don't need a box. You just need to tell the FLO that if you were to buy a gun then you would get a box but you don't think you'll be doing so just yet. I suspect Mum doesn't want a dirty great gun box bolted to her house walls.
naddan28
Can you actually hold a SGC without having any form of gun safe/wall clamp etc at home? Surely, i would have imagined they would insist on a gun safe even if you didn't own a gun incase you brought one and didn't keep it secure? Also would it be safe to bolt a SG Safe to a cellar wall? Its the last place anyone would look and the walls are pretty solid brickwork.
pin
Technically you don't need a safe at all, even if you do keep shotguns in your house, however most forces wan't to see one installed before they will issue a cert, check with your FEO, he/she might allow it, he/she might not
naddan28
Is a wamadet security cord sufficent do you reckon? Just trying to think of something to persuade mum! If not the gunsafe in the cellar should be fine, cant see any FLO objections after all when someone comes into burgal a house they are hardly likely to check out the cellar! Also it will be right next door to the cocker's cage in the kitchen.
pin
What is acceptable will depend on the force and the individual FEO, only way to find out is make contact
young airgunner
naddan im in the same boat as you. asked my parents if i can apply for my sgc, they spoke about it for a week and then gave me a decision. dad was fine but mum wasnt. she is adament that she will not have shotguns kept in the house. i have told her time and time again that they will be locked up securely but she will just not have it. cheers james
naddan28
Just got home, started to work on her explained pin's idea to step dad which will hopefully mean when she rambles too him about it he can explain it. Her other arguements ranging from "you wont be shooting it in the garden" to "I dont want a gun with you and your brother arguing" not forgeting the "you cant shoot little ginee's (my pet rabbit when i was 4), you murderer"
