big bad lindz
Our Golden Retriever has not long had some pups. One of the pups looks like it has entropion in one of its eyes. We are most likley not going to sell this pup but keep if ourselfs. We wont know until it is older if it will be a long term issue an may need minor surgery. My question is do I breed from the bitch again. She did have her eyes tested and we were told that she had a very very minor entropian and that it would not affect her for breeding otherwise here eyes were all clear. Looking at some vetenary web sites, some mention that it is hereditary and some say its not. If we were going to breed from her again in around a year to18 months, we would have to go through the eye test procedure again anaway. Unfortunatly where we stay in the highlands there is currently only one regestered canine eye specialist who caries out the procedure so it may prove difficult to get a second opinion. Any thoughts please. Cheers BBL
PERCE
Did you take your dog to be examined by a vet on the BVA council? http://www.bva.co.uk/public/documents/EP_list_Jan_2012.pdf Earlier this year I had a dog examined by somebody on the list & it would seem two other vets don't know what they're talking about! PERCE
I'd wait until the pup is mature & then seek a second opinion.
big bad lindz
Yes Perce thats what we intend to do with the pup but I was thinking more if we have its mother covered again. The pup has what looks like entropion the bottom eye lid has not come out fully so we will wait as its only just 5 weeks old and when we take the pups to the vet for there jag and chiping it will get looked at. JDog
Five weeks is far too soon to make a diagnosis of entropion which would adversely affect a mature dog. The problem is though if it is entropion the dog could not be operated on to cure it until it is 8 months old at the least.
Bazooka
Does entropion not show around 10-14 weeks? There is a condition called pyoderma or something similar sounding that shows in a similar way but can be treated with a course of anti bac's. You would be better off going now and seeing a vet to get an opinion. The condtion pyoderma does sometimes affect on eye and looks like entropion, it soon spreads to other areas of the face like small blisters. The dogs neck glands sometimes swell at the same time as it's immune system fights the infection. Get a vet to look at it.
big bad lindz
I would not even think about any operation until at least 8-10 months. We have had Golden Retreivers and bread from them for over 25 years and this is first time we have seen this. If the problem does not go away as the pup matures we will probibly have it looked at and most likley have her spayed at the same time.
