New 17 hmr, what round to use?

Recommended Posts

I have recently brought a second hand 17 hmr for rabbits and foxes (at a sensible distance).

Can anybody recommend a decent sub and hv round for bunnies and foxes.

gun is a cz 452 with sak mod

Not brought any yet as I've been using my rim fire for now.

As far as I'm aware subs for the HMR don't exist, do they? I think the HMR is a purely supersonic round.

As to other rounds, most people use the ballistic tipped rounds such as Remington, Federal or Hornady. The advice will be try a few and stick to one your gun seems to 'like'.

For fox what about CCI 20 grain "small game" hollow point? Well placed shot at a sensible range and it's game over.

Thanks for reply thunderbird. I don't know, just going off rim fire rounds as it's my 1st hmr.

So there all hv rounds then really??.

Yes are they the rounds with the blue tips, I think I've read some people have hhd a lot of probs with cracked cases

The blue tips are hornady, they also come in orange and red, there may be other colours but i haven't seen them, they are all the same.

Mine likes hornady and winchester, the best thing to do is buy a pack of each in your shop and try them.

As for the split necks they do happen but i think it is down to older batches, funnily enough i had a click and delay before the round went off yesterday, but again this does happen occasionally.

Hi Richo85

You seem to be using the expression 'rimfire' just for the .22lr

Both the .22lr and the .17hmr are rimfire. The .22lr is generally used with subsonic ammunition (quiet) and all hmr round are supersonic (noisy).

Although useful on foxes at sensible ranges the .17hmr is not generally regarded as a rifle for fox. It is very good for head shooting rabbits at 100 yards or a bit more with practice.

There is not so much difference between makes of bullet in the hmr but it is still worth trying a couple just in case your gun likes one better than the other.

The .17 Hornady v-max in 17gr is very popular and I am not impressed by the slightly heavier 20gr bullets.

100 yards is a good distance to zero and off a bipod you should get 5 shot groups within the area of a 2p coin. If you cannot, don't shoot rabbits that far out.

Hopefully you will spend a lot of time shooting paper targets to learn how the gun shoots. The bullet drops quite significantly after about 120 yards.

Good luck and before you fire any shots give it one heck of a good clean. Oh... the hmr has a tendency to blow a rabbit inside out so if you want the meat, headshots.
