TaxiDriver
I've just started to try and control numbers a little bit in my back garden to try and protect my bird feeders, nesting birds and planted veggie strip, am taking head shots but wonder whereabouts in the head is best ? The out of the three I've taken in the last couple of days, The first jumped and thrashed and i gave it an instant 2nd shot to avoid any suffering, the second dropped instantly, no movement whatsoever ( this is what i'd hope for) the third one jumped, turned a somersault and thrashed for a second or two and that was it. I've been aiming to be just behind the eye at bottom of ear ? If presented side on. And literally into top of head if they're climbing up/down or straight between eyes if straight on. spandit
Most animals will kick for a bit when shot. It's distressing but unless they're squealing & thrashing about for more than a few seconds then they're cleanly killed
Nick8310
Another thing to take into account is the distance and power, taking a long distance shots or with a low powered rifle could be the differance between clean kills or not, regardless if the shot is perfectly placed. That said I agree with spandit most critters will thrash a little it's the natrual reaction and muscle spasms. That all said and done, rifle about 12ft lbs and no more than 30 yards when taking a shot you will be fine. Good luck grey hunting Nick :-D
welshwarrior
Your aiming for the right spot squirrels are hard as nails and sometimes refuse to accept you've killed them, muscles keep twitching for ages. Also be careful they play dead and will bite as you or a dog go to retrieve them, a mates cocker was hurt quite badly by one playing dead. Sha Bu Le
Neil I have no problems dropping them at 20 metres with my sub 12 HW100, you are certainly aiming at the right spot. As other members have said they often do jump around a bit as the nervous system goes haywire from a brain shot. if it lasts more than a few seconds then a second shot should be taken. Anyhoos no squizzers left, cleared them out of my little bit of land (unless they are giving me a body swerve). ATB Bri
