lakeside1000
I had been in the hide a couple of hours, fired off about a dozen shells and decided to go pick up a couple of birds that had dropped on the ditch line about 30 yards up from the hide, I walked slowly along the ditch looking into the marginal plants for signs of the birds, sure enough there was a few feathers and a hole in the tall grass, I switched the Beretta into my left hand and parted the grass to expose the dead bird, the grass in front of me about 1 to 2 metres away exploded in a huge upward wave, a roe dear rocketed into the air, and attempted to clear the ditch in one , falling short due to the long grass she half slid back into the long grass, but quickly regained her footing, two more bounds and she was in the tall barley and sprinting away, about 50 metres away she paused and looked back at me, happy I was not in pursuit she dropped her head and disappeared into a deep tram line in the barley, that was the last I saw of her, it was only then I realised how shaken I was, the whole episode had lasted just a few seconds but my pulse was racing, I collected the birds and went back to the hide for a coffee and a sit down, at my age I can do without these heart stopping moments thank you,

lakeside1000
I've been really close when I've seen them coming and just watched, but when your not expecting one to appear its a hell of a shock, especially as I had been blasting away with the 12 bore , you would think it would have legged it after the first shot. as you say though, quite a sight that close, I don't shoot deer as I don't have a FAC, but when you see them that close you wouldn't want to, very different from looking through a sight at a couple of hundred yards, My dad once told me never look them in the eye, you will never be able to pull the trigger, I think he was referring to the 'other' side in the 39-45 war, still the principal is the same, now where do I apply for my FAC,
