spandit
Just looked at my licence again and I am allowed to possess a ".22 rifle" - doesn't state LR or even RF (same goes for ammunition). Does this mean I could buy a .22 CF rifle (if I got rid of my .22LR)? I'm covered for a .223 specifically but what about .22 hornet, for example? CharlieT
What did you apply for. I suspect that if you applied for a RF and bought a CF, even if your RFD would sell you one, they may think you were taking the mikey. Particularly when you notified them of the acquisition. What does the ammo say ?. If you want a CF then apply for one, would be my advice. Why risk your relationship with your licensing team. There has to be trust on both sides. spandit
Ammo says ".22" Frankly, I'd want to keep a .22LR so it's not a spare slot but just wondered where I stood. Might take it into my local RFD & see what he says
eccles
What does it say on buying 1 , usually say to buy said rifle ,mod etc and ammo. Don't think a CF will be on it unless you asked for 1 atb Terry
eccles
Also if you have asked for a CF say 223 thats all you can buy same 22.250 etc does not mean you can buy any cal. atb Terry
CharlieT
Also remember that some of the "typists" that work in the licensing departments are "temps" and wouldn't know one caliber from another. It's probably just a simple typing error. You know what you applied for, to exceed that, because of a typing error on your certificate, would be plain foolish and may be viewed as you not being trustworthy. Remember that ACPO have stated, and written to all licensing departments, that authorities to acquire must be specific, ie .22rf or ..222 and so forth, not just .22 I go back to my original question, what did you apply for. If your certificate is wrong, then send it back to be amended.
eccles
If you look on your cert Firearms possessed or authorised to be purchased or acquired . Look at purchased + acquired it will say Calibre ,Type Quantity etc . It will say .22 or 223 or 22.250 etc if not there can't buy any not even a fac airrifle. atb Terry
eccles
AS Charlie T asked what did you ask for.
Good shot?
Simple answer, ring licensing tell them what you applied for and get confirmation from them what has been allowed and arrange for licence to be corrected.
spandit
I think I asked for .22LR (along side .223 and .17HMR), can't remember now (got the licence in October last year) I've already filled the slot with a .22LR anyway so this is an academic question but curious as to your thoughts. I hadn't even noticed until today that it didn't specify rimfire, I suppose technically I could buy FAC air in .22 but don't have a need for it (and as I have said, the slot is already filled)
eccles
If it does not state .22 air FAC you can't buy 1. if you had .22 air you could not buy a 177 air in fac .You can only buy what is stated on you cert. If you put in for a 223 + HMR that should be listed to purchase on your cert. If you asked for mod to that will be on it as well . atb Terry
spandit
I've got .223, .22 & .17HMR, all plus mods

Following on from your "hypothetical" questions..............and going back to your opening post, No, you can't buy anything. If you get rid of your .22rf, you will have to put in a variation to acquire another firearm and on the variation application you will need to stipulate what caliber you require and your good reason to acquire. spandit
Thanks for all the replies. Went into my local RFD to buy some shotgun cartridges and asked him. He said that he'd only sell me a .22LR and nothing else, not even a .22WMR. Guess that settles it, then. Very tempted by a .17HMR that was in there - I know I'm allowed to buy it (by the police anyway, not necessarily by the wife...!)
