naddan28
I just don't get peoples fascination with "Rovers" in any shape or form. My mate had a top spec Range Rover Vogue which he bought low mileage one owner FSH from a dealer. The thing was a death trap and nothing electrical worked [full stop]. As far as cars go, the sensible money is on Jap or German I am afraid. I do remember seeing on telly years ago someone on the Countryside alliance march wearing a T shirt that said "I would rather push my Land Rover than buy Japanese". Well, it's his choice, but I would take reliability over pushing.... P.S. Z4 is a poofs car well someone tell me gf about the z4, worryingly its the best car she has chosen. Hence, why we have decided i choose, so a honda s2000 or a rx8 etc
Mungler
You have not named a hetrosexual car yet. All that are missing is the MX5 and the KA streetcar for the "full house" of hairdresser's motoring Be a man and tell the gf how it's going to go down - nah poofs cars. I am but i dont see the problem with the honda S2000 or even a mazda rx8. Don't forget there is only me and her, so its that or a corsa, 207 etc. What is the point in a huge mondeo, m5, a6 etc for 2 people!

The s2000 and rx8 will not be in the same league as the merc's and bmw's in comfort over long distances. There are pleanty of sporty 2 door cars. Just depends if you want comfort, bleeding ears, or boot space mitsu evo... scooby impreza.... honda civic type R.... Type S.... bmw 3 series.... audi S3 really depends what you want and for how much.

Honda s2000 sounds like a hair dryer, deathtrap in the wet, looks rubbish and will fall to bits Masda rx8 is a nice motor, have you seen the fuel consumption figures? If you drive like a nun you might just get 20mpg, hoof it and its going to cost you If you want a stylish 2 seater why not get an s4 ragtop? Mmmm (ok its got 4 seats but as clarkson said the last person to look good in the back of a convertible was hitler)
Axe
Nick , unfortunately the Legacy is not in the same class (size) as the Volvo. It also doesnt come in Diesel. A neighbour has one and I agree it is a nice car though. I was really dissapointed that the Audi A6 did not make the grade for me. As I said its a wonderful car and looks fantastic. Naddan the A6 is the next one up from the A4 so I doubt the A4 has a bigger boot. On the subject of Sportsters, I wouldnt touch an RX8, infact I wouldnt tuch any Jap sportster except maybe the Honda S2000. I cant get a 4x4 and dont really need one so the only cars I can see that are in the running are the BMW 5 Series, Mercedes E Class or the Volvo V70, none of which I am particularly drawn too
Mungler
Do you need to go brand new - leasing through a business etc? Or is second hand an option?
Highlander
V70...if it's as fast at running as that damn ad it'd be quicker on a pushbike
Axe
Mungler, it will be a company car. Due to the miles we can cover in three years we would be hard pushed if we bought second hand. The biggest benefit being the warranty and breakdown cover you get with a new car, not that i've needed the latter as yet.
ziplex
I bought a Vectra estate last year, yes go on.......laugh all you want, most people do until they drive it, as I buy my own and claim mileage. Works out at 40p first 10,000 miles and 25p thereafter. I bought the car secondhand with 3,400 miles on the clock whereby it had taken it's depreciation hit and cost me £13k, it's a 3.0 V6 diesel and is comparible, if not better, in some respects to the BMW lump. (The 535d on the other hand is a different story altogether)! I get 42mpg at the moment and you really have to drive it hard, (losing the point with a diesel), if you are to manage to get it to register below 40mpg. Do the sums....I rarely travel less than 25-30,000 anually which is easily manageable on what I claim. The car is only group 12 insurance and is covered for everything inc. the battery and exhaust until the end of the warranty for £180. Buy a car that's even more fuel effecient and your well up every month...............depends on how much of a snob you are, my car choice obviously dictates i'm not Oh and if you can find a car with more room in it, in it's class, i'd like to see it, three springers in the back and they are in heaven. Having said all this, the new Volvo looks a fine car and for me, whichever you choose, diesel has too many benefits to ignore.
naddan28
how about a jag x type estate? They are meant to have cracking diesels and a nice alternative to the BMW & Merc.
Axe
The Jag is a nice car indeed especially the interior.

ziplex
The Jag is a nice car indeed especially the interior. Yes! A suggestion that was not laughed at! Laugh it up! ...............lovely looking interior, but it has a tiny boot i'm sure. The V6 twin turbo diesel is a great engine, the 2.2 Ford derivative is the only one available in the X-type though,...I think.
Highlander
Yeah lovely UNTIL you put a muddy shooting party and a couple of wet dogs in it

Axe
The one problem is does have besides being a mondeo, is that the rear seats don't fold flat just like the Audi A6.
ziplex
Yeah lovely UNTIL you put a muddy shooting party and a couple of wet dogs in it Yep.............house or home syndrome, back of my car belongs to the dogs and it is used for everything including lumping pallet loads of stuff around in work, fishing etc. Depends how determined you are to keep up appearances 'cause that will take a lot of looking after................still very nice though.
