Steel Shot for Ducks

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Just wondering weather I can use steel cartridges with my AyA Yeoman O/U? I don't really want to use them with the gun as it is a lovely gun and don't want to "reck" it but I do have a FEG boxlock and not really fussy about it but do they really do damage to your gun? Can you recommend any shells for me to use for the ducks?

Thank you :)

DazzJo

It's up to you, really. I have two non steel proofed guns that I've used plenty of HP steel through. However, I wouldn't put steel through just any gun. I would really (for a 12 gauge) want a 3" chamber and magnum proof, also multi choked.

i bought a pump action benelli for use with steel exclusively.

you can buy a hatstand for not much money, cheaper than replacing yeoman like for like.

But the yeoman is far from an expensive gun. I should stick to no more than 1/2 choke and no HP steel and all of the correct chamber length for you gun - a lot are 3" and yeoman guns don't often have 3"chambers !

I know a heck of a lot of guys who use pre-steel proof days 3" magnums(myself included at times). A forgotten factor is how good the gun is today though and its always best to have it looked at by a proper gunsmith, if I have a gun that is showing signs of its age but is not actually in need of immediate repair I just step things back a tad shell wise

the only issue you might then face is the lighter lower pressure shells are of limited use flighting large duck like mallard but will work ok if its close up over small ponds and flashes especially with widgeon and below in size

Right so would you recommend that I take my yeomans to a gunsmith and see weather I could put steel through them. I can't really be buying another gun really as I've bought 3 in the past 6 weeks :) although I would be happy to take a rollocking of them wife, I can't fit anymore in my cabinet :( or not risk it and sit out of the duck drives?:(

hatstands are cheep especially if there's no hats on them! , but you'd probably be better off knocking them out the air with a walking stick! :)

What about Bismuth, if it's duck drives only? 1 1/8oz (32g) HV VIP 4's or 1 1/16oz (30g) VIP 4's.

c. £25 a box mind.

No it isn't duck drives only but there are two drives in the day and I've spent a lot of money to join the Sydicate you see and don't fancy sitting out haha! Thing is the shop where I get my cartridges from only sell Express. Do they do a steel shot? Or I would definitely buy the Bismuth.

Express do make steel loads. Some say that they are not the best, but I have fared ok with the Express Supreme Steel in 2 3/4" 1 1/8oz 4's through a non steel proof english 3" chambered magnum, although this has been for flight pond ducks at sensible ranges.

With Bismuth you can be absolutely sure that are safe in your gun for peace of mind.

Just a quick question can you shoot bismuth through a full or three quarter choke?

No trying to hijack your thread mate.

Cheers AS

Yes, treat Bismuth as you would lead but step up one shot size to compensate the lower density.
