manxman
I acquired a lovely English boxlock before Christmas and shot game with it quite well. I've shot skeet with it a couple of times in preparation for an upcoming side by side sporting championship comp & frankly shot pretty poorly. Mid teens or so. I average 22 to 23 with my 686. It fits quite well & open choked at imp. cyl. and 1/4. I can't seem to make sense of the "sight picture" & suspect I'm behind and underneath. Any one have any tips/experience in this kind of thing? Cheers
matone
A lightweight game gun is much easier to get it wrong with but if it fits you well, just concentrate on the bird and shoot.Make sure you`re not lifting your head off the stock looking for the clay too! If you`re not already ,try 24g shells, much nicer and make 2nd barrel targets easier to acquire. Hope this is of help. ehb102
I went for a lesson with my sxs. My eye was to one side, so a gun fit issue. I don't want to get the stock altered as that would cost more than the gun is worth, but I worked out how to hold my head so it shoots true. Which sxs championship out of interest? manxman
The championship is just a local Isle of Man event. I went to 24g straight away after using 32g loads for game. Not pleasant through that gun & probably not fair on the old girl anyway! I've just compared the comb between the two and 686 is slightly higher so maybe a thin raiser? I take your point Matone the gun being light & therefore quite "whippy". Maybe a quicker, instinctive shot with the gun well down rather than my usual, deliberate mount at the break point, wind back to pick up point & drop the gun slightly out of the shoulder? matone
From what you say about the comb height it`s going to shoot flatter than the o/u,you`ll have to make sure you`re well up on the target.Sure you`ll get it figured!Shot some clays with my own s/s the other day,it was a nightmare.Normally shoot really well with it,just couldn`t pull it together though and it really puzzled me!Just different things to shoot and been shooting too much o/u lately, lol! manxman
I chose the gun precisely because of the fit. Guns of this vintage, as I'm sure you know, were stocked for people who were quite a bit smaller. ( I'm talking of a 100 year old gun). To find one with 15" of pull & correct cast for a wide shouldered person was a result. As I stated, there maybe an issue with comb height but that should be relatively easy to address. TIGHTCHOKE
Indeed, that's why mine have been extended to fit me and my son.
manxman
I'm sure your right, Matone. I'll keep plugging away. One of the coaches at the club is a good mate so I'll grab him for some input. Just frustrating when you know you CAN hit them but get stumped when confronted with a prob like this. Old farrier
Your description sounds about right if you don't wish to alter the gunfit all you can do is adjust your sight picture untill you get used to it All the best Of
