mossberg-operator
Like to have a "fun" gun, a toy, a project. Wouldn't do "anything"....Any advice on the matter? Edited July 3, 2014 by londonercsecse
Markbrowning
Is price an issue? Why would you get rid of the 590 furniture, what would you put on it? Obviously the 590 is more FAC friendly, you planning to keep it on SGC or FAC? Is the heat shield important to you? You have a Matt finish on the 590 and shiney on the 500A. If the 590 was a true Mil Spec 590, with a metal trigger guard and heavy walled barrel it would make a difference to the argument.... But it doesn't. Also the 590 has the awful barrel exstention on it, either the bird cage or the trumpet. Depending on your plans and what toys I would argue a 500A tarted up..... Can't decide. Like to work on a not too expensive project. Would keep it as SGC. CanYou explain the 590 barrel extension issue, please? Thx, for answer. Markbrowning
Its not really an issue, its just I'm very fussy. The 590 has a 20" barrel, in order for it to be legal in the UK a 4.5" barrel extension is added to the end. You can either get a solid one or a vented one. http://www.saddleryandgunroom.co.uk/Gunroom/SG_Shotguns_Mossberg.php You can get some idea into look there..... its just that I don't like the look of it. If you get the 590 tri rail..... with the speed feed stock and railed forend.... would you still change it up? The 590 is cylinder bore...... as will be a 500A if you buy a 24" barrel or chop it down to size. That an issue at all? However for £230ish if I remember and a long wait you can get a 24" multi choked barrel to go on the 500A.
Markbrowning
I know its a tough one though, I used to have a 500A and my best mate has a 590. If money was no object I would be tempted to buy the 590..... however if you still plan on replacing the stock / forend then it just seems cash wasted. Build a secondhand 500A up from the ground up and save £££
welshwarrior
590 is easier to up grade to FAC. 500 has lots of other option but both still have lots of toys and add ons. Either gun is a good project.
mossberg-operator
Hi! The 590 from that shop is coming with a 24.5" barrel, was thinking about the solid one. Second from top for 550. Don't want speed feed stock. Worried about shortening the barrel on the 500, how would it look? Wouldn't wait for long on a replacement barrel. I'm short and don't have a proper grip on the for end when it is in it's forward position. So if i can modify stock length slightly would help to get that 1", I think. To do all this with a brand new gun (the 590)? Don't know. Hence this tread. Edited July 3, 2014 by londonercsecse

saddler
I have seen 24" plain barrels for the 590 for sale (as overruns from a special order) @$90 Trying to get a few brought over
Les*1066
I think it would depend on how much of a 'project' the 500A will be. If it's just a cosmetic job, then it would be worth a punt, but anything mechanical and I think I'd be looking at the new one.

The long wait would only be for the choked 24" barrel, Saddlery and Gunroom stock a normal 24" for the 500A but just cylinder choke, no rib & bead sight. However there is ones out there with the slug barrel on with rifled sights if thats what you are after too. Chopping the barrel down to 24" is easy and looks fine. This has been done to this one: http://www.guntrader.co.uk/Guns-For-Sale/Mossberg_Shotgun_600AT_For-Sale_140528121326001 If you are short, and want a short LOP may I suggest the Hogue youth stock. Great stocks but only has a 12" LOP. Link below is from midway so stupidly expensive but you would be able to source elsewhere for cheaper. http://www.midwayuk.com/epages/Midway_UK.sf/en_GB/?ObjectPath=/Shops/Midway_UK/Products/169170&ff_pos=5&ff_origPos=4&ff_simi=98.81&ff_TrackGUID=53B5D34C-AAAF-FE11-A426-1414141DA9F6 I know you said you didn't want the speed feed stock.... however this has a short LOP too, shorter than the factory one. Might be around 13"..... (Ed you might wanna jump in here and confirm) I have seen 24" plain barrels for the 590 for sale (as overruns from a special order) @$90 Trying to get a few brought over Please tell me more, didn't think they did a 24" for the 590 at all...... Is there anything else to think about job wise on a gun like this?
