Rogc
Ive decided that the 2'8 swb pajero is going. I want something reliable, able to tow my caravan, comfortable and good off road. I've narrowed it down to the above 3 vehicles. What do the PW members recommend. I know im asking a open question, but there seem to be so many pros and cons to each. My budget is 5 to 6K, Shogun looking at a 53 to 56 reg, disco 53 to 54 reg. Any advice appreciated.
Twistedsanity
We have a 57 shogun , awesome car and we have just completed our second tour of Scotland In it , owned it two years now and aside from new discs on the back and a split boost hose it has been faultless as have all our other shoguns and pajeros. I like range rovers but unfortunately so do drug dealers and footballers neither of whom I wish to resemble or be mistaken for. Beware the road tax on some em though as ours is about £500 PA , expensive but reassuringly so as it's not going to ever be a chav favourite whilst its in that bracket
dodeer
I'd look at a semi bomb proof Nissan Patrol 3.0 or see if you can find a Landcruiser for that cash.
Mentalmac
I had a 02 shogun, Can suffer from head gasket as well as fuel pumps. (Both fairly expensive issues).
ferguson_tom
I had a similar search 6 months ago and we ended up going for a Kia Sorrento as got better age/mileage for the money and its a fantastic motor the only criticism I have is steering is a bit vague and it doesn't have a 7 seat option. But you do get loads of leg room on the back seats. I got the automatic and towing our 1800kg twin axle caravan its great. Off road they good as well as got low range with diff locks.Out of the three you mentioned though I would have a shogun, just make sure it's well serviced, fuel pumps going are not uncommon. My friend has just bought a second newer one as his 54 plate has been so good and it has a very hard life towing a 3500kg ifor most of the time a lot of going off road as well. The 54 plate is still going strong the new one is for his mrs. Edited July 29, 2014 by ferguson_tom
steveb
Had a 53 plate shogun it jad to have fuel pump (£2k) clutch and dual mass fly wheel (£1700) they are a nice car to drive but when the go wrong they are very pricey

Mentalmac
Just to add that was a recon pump too. Auto far safer bet Mine was on its way out I discovered whilst it was up for sale so took it down from sale and webuyanycar'd it. Once I realised it was on it's way out - I couldn't sell it to anyone for fear of feeling terrible. Great cars until they go wrong as you say. When my head gasket went it was actually cheaper to get a whole second hand engine!
