I was talking to my cyber(geek)guru at work about the problems we have had recently, and I`m sure that pin and the other IT bods will either bare this up or shoot it down, but he reckons that a lot of viruses are started off like this.

Firstly someone makes up the malware/spyware/virus/waddever and after it is spread it is patched by the various anti virus/mal/spy companies but not before it has been spread to a goodly few and the way they go about this is by giving the punters(yes you and I) a little bait to see if we will bite, this will be some freebie to click on and then it is past your security as it doesn`t "see" the bait as it has been programmed to look for something that is already known.

Then the fan and the poop are in collision mode :) !

I hope this is clearer than mud as my mate had to go over it a couple of times for me and please feel free to correct me if I`m wrong.

Anyhow the bottom line is downloader beware !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is certainly true that, we will call them computer nasties, are spread this way.

Often a link will claim to be a porn video of someone, click it and you have to download something to watch it - bang. Or if there is a flaw in Internet Exploder or Firefox, simply getting you to visit a "malicious" website might be all that is needed to get you.

Personally I would never visit a link posted on a website, board or in an email unless I was expecting to get something like that sent, and I trust the person sending/posting it. Even then they can get hit by nasties as we all know and then you can't even trust your friends..

Remember to keep AV software up to date, run regular scans and keep windows up to date with patches.

This is somewhat over simplified, mostly because its late and boring, however..

A Firewall can be thought of as a bouncer with a guest list. If your nasty isn't on the list, he isn't getting in.

Clicking on links on the internet can be thought of as adding names to the guest list, the bouncer isn't going to stop the nasties coming in. You asked for it, your firewall won't help you.

Firewalls aim to protect you from "things" on the net you don't ask for, anti-virus and anti-spam are there if things get through.
