686 - fitting a game stock to a sporter

I posted last week about wanting a second hand left handed stock for my 686. Many of you kindly gave me contacts to try and I managed to track one down at Chris Potter Gunsmiths. Their service was excellent and it arrived next day.

The stock fit to action is fine but I have one small issue. The trigger guard stands proud of the stock. On my Sporter there is a black thick washer (about 3mm thick) between the trigger guard and the action. Without it I'm sure the guard would be flush on the game stock.

Can anyone confirm that the washer is just fitted to the sporter stock or are they fitted to both the sporter and game stocks? I've tried looking at schematics but haven't been of any help.

I could remove the washer but would require a shorter screw as not to protrude the guard when tightened.

Hope someone can advise.

Myles

The 68x series had a slight modification to the action dimensions which affects how stocks fit. I had the reverse problem to you. I fitted a newer stock to my 80's 687 and needed the spacer and longer screw, my gunsmith got it from GMK. I should think the shorter screw would be available from them too.

Just out of interest, whilst the stock is off the gun have you removed the spacer and just put the trigger guard back on the action using the longer screw, does it touch, or get in the way of anything within the action body, if not why not just use the longer screw?

The action is countersunk for the screw head. To answer my own question, I've just had a reply back from GMK. Thought I'd share in case anyone ever posts with a similar issue -

There is a washer under the sporter model, not the field.
BER-C95239 is the code for the shorter trigger guard screw – specify nickel finish, they are in stock and available to order through your dealer.
Hope this is of help,
Andy
