Finally got Mrs H talked into getting a dog , i wanted a lab ( I had 4 when i lived with my parents) but she thinks they are to big , but she would have a cocker spaniel. Is this a good choice or not. It would be used for rough shooting , wildfowling and pigeons.

Hello mate same as me, just got her talked round and to be used for the same purpose. The working cocker is apparently an excellent choice and do the job as good as any other i am led to believe. Hope this helps!! :D

I've worked cockers for over 12 years now on a local pheasant shoot. They are excellent little workers with amazing stamina - last season in one week I did 5 successive days beating with the 2 year old little black & white bitch - she's the only one I used all last season. The Chocolate Brown dog is used by my son, the Black bitch is the mother of the pups so she didn't do much work this season, & finally the old Black dog is retired - he's 14 years old, and completely deaf due to 2 strokes last year, but apart from his deafness he's fully recovered and nearly as quick as the others. I only use my dogs for beating, but I know a few others that use them for picking up. Not sure how good they will be for wildfowling though - depending on what & where you are shooting - I think they would struggle a bit in a faster flowing river & doubt very much if they would be able to retrieve a goose, but they excel themselves in flushing pheasants & game & can get into the tightest of cover.

Here's my 4 dogs :-

And here's one of our 5 pups born nearly 5 weeks ago :-

I HAVE A COCKER MYSELF WHICH IM JUST TRAINING (the only problem im having at the minute is stopping her on the retreive) BUT MY OPPINION ON THE BREED IS THAT THEY ARE AN EXCELENT DOG FOR THE JOB AND SEEM VERY VERY EAGER TO PLEASE.I ALSO HAVE A LAB WHICH IN MY OPPINION IS AN EXCELENT DOG (well does the job i want) BUT COCKERS IN MY OPPINION ARE A LITTLE HARDER TO TRAIN AS TO MUCH DOMMINANCE WILL MAKE THEM ROLL AND VERY TIMID (frightened).IF THE BREEDING IS RIGHT YOU WILL HAVE MANY MANY HOURS,WEEKS,MONTH TRAINING ALL OF WHICH IS VERY ENJOYABLE.

GOOD LUCK

ROB
