marsh man
I don't know weather your got more geese around the Wash area now, or less than you had , but down on our marshes they are now becoming a problem to the farmers who have just put winter wheat in on recently harvested sugar beet land. This morning I went down the marsh just outside of Yarmouth for a walk with the dog and I have seen a lot of Geese at times on these fields but not like the amount that was down there today , which I recon was between 4 and 5000 and when you consider they were on 3 fields that's a lot of Geese. After walking them off they went over the river on more old beet land and not long after the whole lot lifted at the same time as the farm manager had seen em and sent his dogs across the field to put em up. What they didn't like was when a rocket was fired up towards em and with the flair and then a big boom it looked like one of the old maroon rockets weather it was one of them I don't know but whatever it was they didn't go much on it. So getting back to the title are you seeing more now or less ? , and now its turning a bit colder we are now seeing more Widgeon but no where near the numbers we expect a bit later on , so if any of you guys are coming down this way you should see several but seeing them and bagging one or two is another story. fenboy
I have seen far less geese this week than I did last , perhaps they are on a Norfolk vacation. Funnily enough I was only discussing last night that I am not seeing many wigeon at all , i was expecting more to have turned up by now . in contrast i am seeing lots more Mallard this year , which is a good thing as last year was very poor. Last Thursday or Friday afternoon around the Acle area there were skeins coming in all the while I was there and the height they were flying at they had come a fair ole way , so maybe a few have left your area and came down ours for some peace and quiet . As for Widgeon I am lucky I have got some water on some marshes I go on , and if left for a few days you can normally get a duck or two but I can count the rough nights I have shot down there this year on one hand . 6.5x55SE
Marshman same thing happened last season on the November moon and if I remember correctly they built up to 10,000 in your area then approx 3-4 weeks later most left your area and good numbers was once again using the Wash until after being heavily shot inland for 10-12 days they then moved back to North Norfolk then off back North. Having Banded/Ringed Pinks odd GWF and other odd Geese in the flocks helps to keep track on there movements something that I personally find interesting and fascinating about Geese and the fact Geese I've tried to outwit on a morning another Fowler like your self can many miles away be trying to outwit the very same Geese that Evening or Moon Flight.I'd be very interested to know if you or your fowling friends spot or shoot a Banded/Ringed Pink in the next 2-3 weeks as my Good friend and I just missed out on Shooting one a few days ago and we have not seen it since or the numbers of Pinks. Good luck whilst you have good numbers of Pinks also would be interested to hear if and when you're numbers drop

You are right about the numbers going up and down during the season as when they done a bird count there were several 1000 down after the new year than there were before Christmas , but now all the geese don't roost on the reserve like they used to up until 2 or 3 years ago . Now some stay around the Waverney Valley , Broadland Area , and the Halvergate Marshes so I imagine its a job to know how many are in the area at the same time. Penelope
Record numbers of pinks counted at a number of sites this year, so I guess they have had a good breeding season. All fascinating stuff. Edited November 5, 2014 by Penelope
