Hi All

Me and Mrs sweepy have got a springer and a clumber spaniel pups after alot thinking we have decided to send them away for training as we don't think we can do the dog justice being total noivces on the dog front,do you think we are doing the right thing? Both dog are from top field trail lines and we don't feel that we can do the dogs justice so we are thinking that we may do more harm than good trying to do it ourselves.Has anybody else been down this road and if so what do you think you dog benefited from it

Mr and Mrs Sweepy,

Visit WWW.essexspanielgettogether.co.uk

I trained my first springer with them last year and he has turned out OK, not the best by any means but certainly a respectable standard.

They hold their AGM in a couple of weeks time and start training in about a month. You will get all the support you need from them, and superb training methods. They are also a great bunch of people socially.

If you want any info PM me and I will let you have some more details.

I will not knock sending your dogs away as many do and are successful, however the dogs do not get to bond with you as their handlers.

The ESGT will show you that in a few months of reasonably hard work you can have a dog to be proud of.

Morning Sweepy's,

It really depends on what you want from the finished dog, whether you plan on trialing, and if you have the time and commitment to train. Training sessions are not long and drawn out as a matter of fact most formal sessions are about 20 minutes once or twice a day. After that it is play time.

As for the BIG SCARY dog Training that is full of DARK FORBODING SECRETS :good::lol:  Training is not difficult it is a bunch of little tiny baby steps....which are really just stupid pet tricks.....that you chain together to reach an end result

If you decide to train yourselves you will get alot more pleasure out of your finished dog, and I am sure that you will find enough help on here to get you through your problem areas. Just remember to think each exercise out and have things clear in your head before you start.

I have kept runners and terriers for years. The training of which is relatively easy. Recently I have aquired, my first 'gun dog', as ESS and admitt that I was rather daunted about the training aspect, I thought about sending him away, but after reading loads of books, extracting what info I found to be relevant to me and what I wanted out of the dog it appeared that in reality it is not as difficult as one thinks.

effectivley if you have pups, you have blank canvass to work with, the steps to training are simple and methodical.

To be honest, I could have bought a 3 year worker - fully trained, but I feel that it is so rewarding to train you own dog.................to me the thrill of watching your pup follow the commands you personally have taught it takes some beating......................To my pup..................I am his everythng...and the pleasure I derive from watching him grow, learn and bond with me ......for free..............is priceless........

Im not pooh poohing dog pro -dog trainers...but I feel they are best utilisied if you really havent got the time to train yourself, or if you have a dog with problems you just cant fix.................

If you want, I have a full spaniel / gundog training guide on a word doc. that was gifted to me by a very kind PW member...................a quick perusal of this should allow you to decide whether or not you feel you are upto the job............either way...good luck with the dogs!

Thanks all for your advice,we have been trying real hard to get our heads around this problem but it seems Mr sweepy has got longer hours to do at work and the thing is the ess she seems to be getting more hard work the more we try with her ,where she use to be a good dog as the training has developed she has begun to go backward in other respects whether this is common I don't know but we will give it another couple of weeks and see where we are going

Hello all dog's temp's are diffrent & that need's to read that's the key & sending away can be good but like driving a car you also need to be trained to drive your dog as they will soon learn a soft touch & it take's 1second & or command & there off.
