The Essex Hunter
He is my solution to a lamp shy fox and after discussing it with Robert Bucknell I found it has started to work… I have seen this fox a few times over the past months and despite my efforts he always moved into the cover. Each fox is different and some require a different approach, over the last few months I have changed my tactics on the hard too get foxes, this is mainly due to requests from a couple of farmers who have not connected for what ever reason…. It does not require a dimmer switch as I have found that is something else to go wrong. As I mainly lamp alone with an lf 170, I have to use it to sweep the field, but changing to a small HID lamp with a red chip has made a great difference. This fox would have done the same thing; well it did but ended up not making it back to cover!! Using the HID lamp it does give a good return on the eyes but not so strong as to send the lamp shy fox heading for the hills…. With my main lamp clipped on the scope I used the small lamp and picked up the eyes enough to set the gun. When the big light went on I knew it would only be a second or two be for the fox bolted, true to form he did but with the wide beam from my lamp and him running in a straight line away from me all I had to do was roll the gun in the sticks and over he went….he fell around 180 yards with the 75 grain round doing what it is deigned to do…. I also echo the comments made by FoxHunter1 on the lack of responses on which is not an easy quarry to deal with………..
