Medical files

Is this something new, I renewed both last year in Durham and was not asked to pay any extra . As far as I knew the police send an enquiry to your GP in case you are a known psychiatric risk or have other problems which might present a danger when combined with bang bangs- which I don't think is unreasonable really.

If the police want a medical report at any other time during the life of a certificate, this is classed as enforcement. Any costs relating to enforcement should be met by the police and not the certificate holder.

Cheers David but their take on it is,the certificate has came to the end of its life for that period of 5 yrs.So if they where asking you to get the doc to do the med form within the 5yr period then they would meet the costs. But seeing as it's a renewal its treat as though the med form requirement is required between you old cert expiring and the new cert commencing. When I put this to Durham they clearly said that the life time of the certificate is 5yrs(shorter if restrictions applied) so as the lifetime of the cert has come to the end then the applicant that requests renewal must bear the cost.

Sorry Davyo, but they're simply telling you porkies. There is no requirement for the applicant to pay for a GP's report regardless of what you are told by your licensing authority, regardless of whether you are halfway through a certificates life, at the end of it or at the beginning. The issue of compliance is 100% voluntary; there is nothing in law nor HO guidance which states an applicant must pay for a GP's report, nor is there anything in law or HO guidance which allows your licensing authority to insist you comply, nor anything in law or HO guidance which allows them to refuse grant or renewal for non-compliance. They are telling you lies Davyo.

As an aside in the early 70's when I lived in Hartlepool (British West Hartlepool) & came under Cleveland Constabulary they were considered much more stringent than the relatively laid back Durham Constabulary of the time when it came to SGC/FAC licenses.Wish I still had the Browning Citori I bought new from John F Gent's during that time but sold it in '84 when my first wife landed me in debt: still miss the gun but not her.

Any constabulary routinely requiring applicants to submit additional non-statutory medical reports as part of the application process, and to pay any extra fee the doctor may demand for preparing them, is acting outside its statutory authority.

BASC is advising members not to comply with such schemes. Members should follow the established legal process when applying for certificates.

Has BASC written to all members residing in affected areas advising them of this?
