steve_b_wales
I have just bought a new computer which has Windows 8 on it. I would like to use Windows 7 if possible, and, if not, remove 99% of the apps that are installed. Can either or both of these be done? Passionforangling
I too bought a new laptop recently with Windows 8 and I hated it. I know you have to move with the times but this was just a jump too far for me. A friend suggested downloading a programme called Classic Shell which can easily be found on a Google search. Download that and it seems to make your computer look like Windows 7. Certainly been a life saver for me.
Schern
You don't have to use the touch part at all really - I don't. Download 8.1 (if it doesn't have it already and if it's a new computer I'd have thought it would) and it should boot you straight to the normal desktop (like Windows 7) anyway. Then just treat the Start menu bit with all the tiles as an expanded start menu. Click the icon or press the windows key on your keyboard, start typing the name of the program you want and off you go.

steve_b_wales
My daughter installed Classic Shell and it's really made a difference. The annoying thing now, is that a few of my programs no longer work with Windows 8. Also, my scanner (CanoScan LiDE 25) won't work anymore as it's not compatible with this system. There are things you can upload to make it work, but it's beyond my skills,
