SNS
Could you not salary sacrifice your car allowance for a leased company car instead ? Obviously depends on the allowance you get but you can get some surprising bargains this way if you go for something with low emissions as that equates to a low tax bill so more car for your car allowance effectively. When I first met my now wife some years ago she had a RAV4- it surprised me with how capable it was in the snow but I never drove it off road. As for a freelander- We had one as a courtesy car a few weeks ago whilst the wife's car was being serviced. I took it shooting and through some pretty soft fields / muddy tracks and it was fine. As ever it's usually the tyres that make the difference- persuade Mrs G down the Freelander route and get some decent tyres would be my view. magman
I would go for the golf and the rav4 both fun to drive and the rav4 will surprise you where you can get Edit to add the rav4 will beat the golf if both diesel Edited December 31, 2014 by magman
bluesj
I would go for a golf and rav4. Not had any thing to do with the Asrtas but i know the golfs are very good. The Suzukis are good but a little basic, the Free lander could have reliability issue (some seam to have all sorts of bugs some are great)
HDAV
Rav4 are great off road and at that low mileage petrol rather than diesel! Honda CRV also worth a look 2.0 petrol is great in the newer ones. Astra for daily driver guess diesel 1.7 better economy than the 2.0litre or look at a Volvo C30/V50 for more refinement. Golfs are way over priced IMO for something a bit different Alfa guiletta (Astra is a prettier frock)

A freelander for £3k most likely will not even get you off your drive on a regular basis Rav 4 and Vitara both good Rav 4 is a better drive and has better economy Vitara would be better off road.
