idiot loafing guide

Recommended Posts

Im after reading a simplistic guide to.loading .410 cartridges ... and l mean simplistics .. as in at the start the items required are named and explained as to their function .. most topics lve read seem to start as if the potential loader hss an elimentary knowledge regards home loading .. l ferl if there were a absolute basic, starting from the ground up, it might entice people to consider participating into home loading .. l realistically would only need about 250 .410 carts per year .. say split between 6's-7's .. lm after a start few absolute scratch intro .. any points much appreciated .. even the individual names if speific itdms required l feel need explaining .. if this sound dimmish, lm not going to apologise .. all new endeavours l feel are best acheived from absolute grass routes and upwards ..

You need a SuperSizer because resizing the brass properly is very important.

A press is not needed..... but an efficient method of depriming and repriming is needed. It is not rocket science, you can make the tools yourself if you did more than making plastic key rings at school.

A bench drill, (£25), scales, Lee scoops and a decent RTO spinner (£35) will be all the tools you need.

Powder, primers wads and shot are available at several good suppliers in the UK.

To start, you need spent carts, or virgin hulls depending on your preference! If spent cartridges are chosen, and fired through a gun other than your own, then resizing may be essensial.

Resizing is carried out by simply using a bush, which compresses the base of the cart back to original spec.

This can be carried out pre, or post decapping!

Decapping, or depriming! Is the method of removing the spent primer! Simply put, a rod is used to press the old primer out!

Priming, is a reversal! Where a new primer is installed into the case!

From here, measured amounts of powder are dispensed into the hull. The weight depends on many factors! Shot size, weight of shot load and powder used etc.

Next comes the Wad. Again depending on shot load, or indeed personal preference, you will insert a wad over the powder. If using fibre, it is normal practice to use a nitrocard over the powder before the fibre wad.

Then you drop your measured weight of shot into, or on top of the wad.

From here, you choose your crimp closure! RTO, or rolled turn over, is carried out by using a over shot card, small circular card! On top of the shot! Then using a drill press with a RTO tool, and applying a little lube like Silicone spray, bring the drill down onto the hull to form a nice crimp.

Or you can use a star crimp, mostly using a press like a Mec etc.

If you only wish to load say 250 per annum. May I suggest a lanes hand loader?

http://www.lanesreloading.com/410.html

On the website, you will find they sell a resizer too! This is the tool you will need to resize the cartridge base!

Also, if you type lanes hand loader into your browser there are a few video's of how it is used!

Hope it helps.
