Shadowchaser
Hello, My shotgun certificate will be up for renewal later this year and I am also going to apply for a Firearms certificate. Apart from using shotguns (for 10 years) and air rifles I have no experience of using rifles. I do however have my own land to shoot on which I'm sure is a bonus. I would like a rifle to shoot rabbits and the odd fox. Is there a calibre that would suffice for both? I may also consider applying for a large capacity shotgun ie a five shot pump action. We often get a number rats that need dealing with and I find myself having to reload my 3 shot pump as rats are escaping. A five shot would more efficient. I appreciate any thoughts and advice. Thanks.
Brad93
No way you will get a fac shotgun for rats I'm afraid. Best to put in for .22LR for rabbits and 223 for fox but expect a mentoring condition depending on force.

neutron619
or a 17 hmr will do rabbits and foxes True, though if you really want only one gun, a .22WMR is just as effective (if not more so) and a heavier bullet for fox (i.e. 50gr) wouldn't hurt. You couldn't put anything so big through a HMR, but you can drop down to a 30gr pill for bunnies in the WMR. No idea whether the feeding costs will be the same, but I'd have thought they were pretty similar. Shadowchaser
Food for thought indeed. I'm sure I can manage with a 3 shot pump - so I will kill that idea. I shall research the types of rifle mentioned.
WelshMike
or a 17 hmr will do rabbits and foxes + 1 for this. Nice little calibre, puts the foxes down nicely with a well placed shot.
