new to the flock
I use my Beagle for rabbits, squirrels, and pheasants :( They will work pheasants in the snot hole covers.....the ones that you can barely get through and the birds run instead of flying..... better than most Springers, Cockers or Labs Just be sure to teach them to recall and to retrieve starting as puppys. NTTF

Cranfield
I have known a few beaters beagles and I don't think any owner can claim that they are a very biddable breed. The last time you see most owners , is when they are disappearing into the next field, because their beagle has got on a scent. Like a lot of hounds, when a beagles nose touches the ground, its ears stop working.

I would not like to count up the hrs I have spent waiting for him to come back, "when he is on a scent" Gave up chasing years ago. Just sit and wait he will be back in about half an hour on average  However, I must say in his defence he is a first class ferreting dog. If he sniffs at a warren and goes and sits down on top of the warren. Then I don't care if it's 50 holes plus there is a rabbit in that warren. Guaranteed. tiercel
Tiercel just out of interest would your dog go to ground on a fox? Not a chance. The words built brick and ty bach come to mind. If they made the hole about 2ft diameter maybee then he would.
